パンクの基礎を築いたと言われているこのバンド。

実際聴いてみるとPunkと言うより、ノリが良いPopな曲が多くて驚く人もいるだろう。

Punkと言うとがなっているとかメロディなくて叫んでるだけとか、言う人が周りにいるが、それは誤解であって、The Clashにしろ Sex Pistols にしろメロディはキャッチーで覚えやすいのだ。

後に出てくるHardcore はスピードあるけれど、小さい時に逆から聞いたせいか、初Sex Pistolsの時は、Punkってスローだと思ったくらい…

もっと、ノリの良さを楽しんでほしいなあと思う。

今日は、前に和訳＆考察した Jonathan Richman (【 I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar】和訳 解説 ジョナサン・リッチマンの魅力について) のいたバンドの最高にノレる曲を紹介しましょっ。

Sex Pistolsもカヴァーした曲だよ。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ州ナティック出身のロックンバンド、The Modern Lovers モダン・ラヴァーズ。

フロントマンでヴォーカルの Jonathan Richman ジョナサン・リッチマンが1970年代から1980年代に結成し、活動していたバンドである。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、彼らのデビューアルバムである『The Modern Loves』からオープニングの曲【Roadrunner】。

“Roadrunner” is a song written by Jonathan Richman and recorded in various versions by Richman and his band, in most cases credited as the Modern Lovers.

The Modern Lovers was an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 1970s and 1980s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of The Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads). The sound of the band owed a great deal to the influence of the Velvet Underground, and is now sometimes classed as “proto-punk”.

これ聴いていると、本当にJonathanってVelvet Under groundが好きなんだなって思ってしまう。

Jonathanは、ボストンでVelvet Undergroundのライブを見て衝撃を受け、バンドを始めたロック少年だた。

ダメ元でVelvet Undergroundのメンバーである　John Cale に自分のバンドのプロデュースを頼んだらOKして貰ったと言うLucky Boyでもある。

この曲は、その影響が顕著に現れている曲だ。

たった２コードで校正されている、美しいVelvet Undergroundの【Sister Ray】からインスパイアされて作ったメロディ。

笑ってしまうRoadrunnerの陽気な歌詞(孤独の上に広がる陽気さ)が、延々に続くメロディに乗ると不思議な普遍性を感じるよ。

Roadrunnerは、アメリカに生息しているミチバシリのこと。

ワーナー・ブラザースのアニメに出てくるコヨーテと追っかけっこしている、あの足の速い鳥だと言えばわかるでしょう。

実際はね、あんな青い鳥じゃないのよ、「Fineas & Ferb フィニアスとファーブ」のPerry(Lyraの好きなキャラクター)と同じで青でなく茶色なの。

Jonathanが住んでいた場所が出てくるのがツボ。

前に和訳した時も書いかもしれないが、Jonathanの歌詞は、半径10mくらいの話がドカドカ出てくる。

リアルな話を面白おかしく描くところが好きだ。

悲しみ、寂しさを隠している笑いに溢れていて、ちょっぴり泣けて、そして笑えるのが、Jonathanの優しさに思えるの。

誰しも抱えている孤独感や阻害感を愛で包み込む。

そんな歌詞がロックンロールに乗ると、パワーが出てくるよ。

優しくて、お茶目なJonathanのヴェーカルが今夜もあなたのハートに温もりを与えるよ。

Lyraも人々に愛と優しさと、ほんの少しでもパワーを与えられた幸せだな。

The Modern Lovers was prot punk band. It pointed the way towards much of the punk rock, new wave, alternative and indie rock music of later decades. Their only album, the eponymous The Modern Lovers, contained idiosyncratic songs about dating awkwardness, growing up in Massachusetts, and love of life and the USA.

Jonathan Richman grew up in Massachusetts, and wrote this song in 1970. Bandmate John Felice recalls that at that time him and John

used to get in the car and just drive up and down Route 128 and the Turnpike. We’d come up over a hill and he’d see the radio towers, the beacons flashing, and he would get almost teary-eyed. He’d see all this beauty in things where other people just wouldn’t see it.

Jonathan said in this interview:

When I would sing Roadrunner the thoughts that would be going through my own head would be of a cold, freezing night out there. It was not cruising for burgers like American Graffiti… No. It was a lonely kid, which was me, in my father’s station wagon… We put a good beat to it, but I just thought it was so lonely “how’s anyone going to like this?” I never thought anyone would.

Jonathan Richman saw the Velvet Underground multiple times when they played in Boston, and this song’s two-chord structure is directly ripped from the song Sister Ray. John Cale actually produced the first version of this song, and you can almost hear the organist quoting Cale’s licks from Sister Ray.

Stephen King quoted a verse of the song to introduce one of the chapters of his novel Christine. Every chapter of the novel begins with a quotation of lyrics from rock songs about cars.
