今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国ネブラスカ州オマハ出身のミクスチャー・ロックバンド311。

1988年結成。Punk Rockをラップやスカ、レゲエの味付けをして独自のパーティーサウンドにしているロックバンドだ。
ミュージックビデオのノリの良さと、ライブでのパフォーマンスが魅力で、全米各地で精力的にライブをして行く中、ファンのクチコミで知名度を上げて行った真のライブバンドと言える。
今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、311の最大のヒットである1995年にリリースされたセルフタイトルアルバム『311』(The Blue Albumとも呼ばれている)に収録されている、1996年2月リリースのシングル【All Mixed Up】。

All Mixed Up” is a single released by 311. It was on the album 311, also known as The Blue Album. This album was released in 1995 and later went triple platinum, selling over 3 million copies worldwide. The song was co-written by Douglas Vincent “SA” Martinez and Nick Hexum. The duo first started working on the song during the 311 tour supporting Grassroots. After the tour Martinez wrote the lyrics about feeling “confused and being unfaithful” and Hexum took the song’s title from an early Elvis Presley interview in which Elvis claimed he was “all mixed up” over his new-found fame. It later became one of the band’s signature singles.

このミュージックビデオは、ニューヨーク市で撮影されたもので、バンドがマッサージパーラーを訪れ、タクシーに乗って、アパートで少人数の聴衆のために歌を演奏していると言う、なんともプライベート満喫なビデオである。

彼らの最大の特徴はライブでのパフォーマンスの良さ。Chad Sexton とP-Nutのリズム隊2人の高い技術の演奏がこのバンドの生命線とも言える。
この曲はリリース後、大ヒットし、トリプルプラチナになり、世界中で300万枚以上を売り上げだ。この曲は、Nick Hexum と Doug “SA” Martinez のデュオが Grassrouts のサポートのツアー中に共同執筆した最初の曲だった。
ツアー後、Dougは「混乱して不誠実」と感じることについての歌詞を書き、Nick はElvis の曲の中で彼が新しく手に入れた名声に対して「すべて混乱している」と主張した初期のインタビューからタイトルを決めたのだ。それが、後にバンドのシグネチャーシングルの1つになってしまったのだ。
1995年、セルフ・タイトル・アルバム『311』 からのシングル【Down】が、MTVでのヘヴィプレイをきっかけに全米でスマッシュヒットとなり一気に知名度を上げた311。その結果アルバム『311』は、全米で約300万枚を売り上げた。
ライブにおいても、デビュー当時の曲から最新の楽曲を織り交ぜて演奏することが定番で、【Down】の演奏前にNick Hexum が「この曲を古くからの311ファンに捧げる」とMCすることがお決まりとなっている。
バンド名の由来
因みにバンド名の由来は、。地元ネブラスカ州の警察で使用される、公然猥褻に対するコード・ナンバーから。一時期「3つの11番目のアルファベット（つまりK）」で「クー・クラックス・クラン」を表すと言う噂が流れたが、これについてはP-Nutが否定している（ビデオ『Enlaeged to Show Detail』より）。
彼らの公式ファンクラブの代表は、P-Nutの母親と言う、とってもファミリー愛に溢れているバンドでもある。
３１１のサウンドの特徴
311の音楽は、ロック、レゲエ、ヒップホップ、ファンクのブレンドだ。オルタナティブロック、レゲエロック、ラップロック、ファンクメタルとして説明されて来た。それ以外にもファンクロック、ラップメタル、ポストグランジ、オルタナティヴメタル、ニューメタルと色々ジャンル分けもされていて、一般的には一言でカテゴライズ出来ないバンドだと言うことだ。
カテゴライズするより、色々なジャンルのサウンドの良い所取りのバンドだと言った方が良いだろう。

【All Mixed Up】は、トリプルプラチナになった大ヒットアルバム『311』に収録された大ヒットシングルで、Dougの考える「混乱して不誠実」と感じることについての歌詞とヘクサムの見つけたElvis Presley の名声に対して「すべて混乱している」と話していた初期インタビューから取ったタイトルをプラスした曲だ。
セットリストに「AllRe-MixedUp」として表示される曲で又別のバージョンをプレイする事もある。
この曲はStalagリディムの要素を使用していて、レゲエアーティストYellowmanのアルバム『Mister Yellowman』に収録されている曲MisterChinのサンプルから始まるのも、夏に聴いていて気分がアガル要因の１つなのかもしれない。

Nick Hexumは、Elvis Presleyの初期のインタビューから曲のタイトルを取ったわけだが、Elvis が得た名声に対して「すべて混乱している」と言うのも、一見したら贅沢なセレブの悩みに感じる。
だがGrunge 好きのLyraとしては、Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)が、欲しくもない名声にがんじがらめになって苦悩し、亡くなった事も浮かんでくる為に、ただのセレブの悩み歌と軽い曲には感じられない。つまり楽しいだけのパーティーソングだとは思わないと言うことだ。
ただのLyraの趣味の深読みだが、【All Mixed Up】は楽しいパーティーソングなだけじゃなくて、生きる苦しみもさりげなくいれた曲なんだと思う。まるで盛夏が来て喜び勇んで鳴いている1週間の命しか残っていない蝉のようではないか？
アホみたいに泣き叫ぶのも、喜び勇んでバカ笑いをするのも、夏ならか有り？
空を見上げれば、鮮明な青空が。
ラブソングにも、励ましソングに取れるこの【All Mixed Up】で頭をシェイクしながら全て忘れちまうのが良い。

The band often performs a rearranged version of the song that appears on setlists as “All Re-Mixed Up.”
The song uses elements of the Stalag riddim and also begins with a sample from reggae artist Yellowman’s song Mister Chin on the album Mister Yellowman
