今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのはアメリカ合衆国出身のミュージシャン、Iggy Pop イギー・ポップ、本名James Newell Osterberg ジェームズ・ニューウェル・オスターバーグ（1947年4月21日生まれ）

1967 年に結成、その後何度も解散と再結成を繰り返してきたプリミティブなパンク バンド、The Stooges ザ・ストゥージズのヴォーカリスト兼作詞家。

多くのフォロワーから愛され「パンクのゴッドファーザー」と呼ばれる。NPRによって50人の偉大な声の1人に選ばれた。 2010年、彼はストゥージズのメンバーとしてロックの殿堂入りを果たし2020年にソロ作品でグラミー賞生涯功労賞も受賞した。

“Nightclubbing” is a song written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop,  first released by Iggy Pop on his debut solo studio album, The Idiot in 1977. It has been since considered “a career highlight”, along with “Lust for Life” and has been covered by many artists. It is also extensively featured on other media.

ミニマリスト、エレクトロニック、そして実験的なイギー・ポップの堂々たるソロ・デビュー・アルバム『The Idiot』は、The Stooges のニヒリスティックなプロト・パンクからの大きな出発点になった。

この【Nightclubbing】は、デヴィッド・ボウイとイギー・ポップによって書かれた曲であり、【Lust For Life】と並び多くのアーティストにカバーされ、他メディアでも広く取り上げられている。

ナイン・インチ・ネイルズのヒット曲「クローザー」は、曲のローランド・バスドラムのサンプルを修正したもの。トレント・レズナー、ピーター・マーフィー、アティカス・ロス、ジョーディ・ホワイトが後にラジオのライブセッションでこの曲をカバーした。【Nightclubbing】のドラム ループは、Oasis の曲【Force of Nature】で使用。

『Love, Honor and Obey 』のサウンドトラック用に書かれたトラックで、2002 年のアルバム Heathen Chemistry に収録されている。

この曲は、1996 年の映画「トレインスポッティング」で、Iggy Popの別の曲【Lust For Life】と共に取り上げられた。

HBOのシリーズ『Westworld』の第3シーズンのエピソード「ジャンル」で登場もしている。

David Bowie の 1977 年のアルバム『Heros』のように、『Idiot』も西ベルリンで録音されたもので、このトラックとBowie の「ベルリン トリロジー」のトラック、特に「Sons Of The Silent Age」のような曲との類似点は簡単にわかるだろう。

歌詞についてはシンプルで分かりやすいもの。ただ隠喩があったりして妖しい雰囲気があるのが、特徴だ。

＊アイスクリームマシーンは、アイスクリーム製造機のこと。だがこれは甘いアイスクリームを作る意味だけでなくコカイン製造機という隠喩でもあるの。それにブランニューホワイトも、最新の粉にも取れるので個人的には、かなりやばい歌詞だと感じております〜。

あと歌詞の終わりの白一色もあのドラッグの粉の色とも言えるので危険なナイトクラビングは、幽霊のように歩くことだけではく、死へまっしぐらの粉の世界でもあるのでしょう。

先ほどと書いたけど、Iggy自身もインタビューで、David Bowie が想像した曲のオリジナルのコンセプトをほのめかしていて、Bowie が「幽霊のように夜を歩く」ことを書いたら？と提案したから、Iggyは「10分で」その場で歌詞を書けたとも言える。だが、そんな提案なくてもIggy はパパッと描けたに違いない。

だってIggy Popは、自分自身をどう見せるか、何が言いたいのかがハッキリ分かっている人間だからだ。

この曲は、フランスのエルヴィル城で主にレコーディングされたもの。その雰囲気も出ている。だが収録曲の中で最も強力な【Nightclubbing】の妖しい雰囲気はDavid Bowie と Iggy Popが一時居住したベルリンのいかがわしい繁華街の匂いや空気を想わせているからだと思う。

ヤバイ地域、赤いあの電灯の中を夜な夜な歩き回った時を、そして繁華街の部屋で毎日暮らす危ない自分自身をIggy Popは頭に思い描いていたに違いない。

その強烈ないかがわしい時を過ごした経験があるからこそ、Iggy Pop ならではの超俗的なヴォーカルは色を呼び、色気を丸出しにしている。そして歩き回る命を削る粉を伴うナイトクラビングは、霊を呼び寄せる行動だからIggyはこの歌詞を書き、この歌い方をしたのだ。自分を常に持っているんだな。

Iggy Popはブレない男。

The instrumental section to this track was written by David Bowie.

Like “Heroes”, Bowie’s 1977 album, The Idiotwas recorded in West Berlin, and it’s easy to see the resemblance between this track and that of Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy”, particularly songs like “Sons Of The Silent Age”.

Cover Version

The song, which was written and recorded in Berlin, features David Bowie on piano with the aid of a Roland drum machine. When Pop pronounced himself happy with the result, Bowie protested that they needed real drums to finish it off. Pop insisted on keeping the rhythm machine, saying “it kicks ass, it’s better than a drummer”. Pop largely wrote the lyrics on the spot “in ten minutes”, Bowie suggesting that he write about “walking through the night like ghosts”. The song’s riff has been perceived as a mischievous quote of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll”. 

Although lyrically very simple, “Nightclubbing” is an art-rock staple. Written jointly by Iggy and producer David Bowie, it features Iggy on lead vocals and Bowie on piano, with percussion (uncharacteristically for Bowie) being provided by a drum machine.The song has retrospectively been considered one of Iggy’s best, an appeared on the soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting.The lyrics were written after Bowie laid down the instrumental track, partially inspired by an off-the-cuff suggestion from Bowie that Iggy write about “walking like a ghost”.

The drum track was famously sampled by Nine Inch Nails in their 1994 hit “Closer”

The song has been covered by many artists, including Grace Jones, The Jolly Boys, Bluvertigo and The Human League. Grace Jones’ version achieved mainstream success and was included on her album of the same name. Siouxsie Sioux with her band The Creatures covered the song on their 1999 live album Sequins in the Sun. In 2021, American post-punk band Damien Done released a cover of “Nightclubbing” as a single.Nine Inch Nails‘ hit song, “Closer”, features a modified sample of the Roland bass drum from the song. Trent Reznor, Peter Murphy, Atticus Ross and Jeordie White later covered the song during a live radio session.The drum loop from “Nightclubbing” was used by Oasis in their song “Force of Nature”, a track written for the soundtrack of Love, Honor and Obey, and recorded for their 2002 album Heathen Chemistry.The song was featured in the 1996 film, Trainspotting, along with another Iggy Pop track, “Lust for Life”.The song also appears in the HBO series Westworld, as part of the third season, as episode “Genre”
