Grungeが好きな理由…それは、全てを内包しているから。
ハードロックもサイケもブルーズもヘヴィメタルも、そのバンドが培って来たパーソナルな音楽史を基盤にし、音を出す人間のハートから生まれ出てくる音だからだ。
随分前になるがGoogle ＋ってあったのを覚えてる？
あれ、FBに対抗して設立された企画だが、Gが初めて失敗したプロジェクトになってしまった。
実は誘われるままにアレに入っていた時期があって、誘われると優柔不断だから流されるままにホイホイOKしてしまうLyraな為に。気づいたらビックリ！あれよ、あれよと言う間に200以上のグループに入ってしまった。
中にはLyraが運営チームで、管理人をしていたし、その中にはGrunge Rockのグループもあった。
前にも話したが、HMやGrunge 好きは日本では考えられないくらい海外では多い。そして、メチャ強くて熱い。

中には変な人もいたが、ほぽいい人達で良く見に来てくれた。
いきなり断ち切れになってしまったG+だったから次にシフトするのが難しかったのと、Lyraは忙しくて時間がない事もありG＋なくなると同時にやめた。
やめてなくて別移動したのも若干あるが、相変わらず余り見に行けてない。
そんなイケナイ(笑) Lyraのブログには、Grunge好きやHM系の人達が良く来てくれる。ありがたい。
SNSのとある場所では、Grungeはいまいち人気ないのよね。だがここでは、１番人気かも。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国ワシントン州シアトル出身のロックバンド、Pearl Jam パールジャム。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、1991年リリースの人気アルバム『Ten』に収録されている1992年8月リリースのシングル【Jeremy】のB面である【Yellow Led Better】。
Bサイドだが人気が高くラジオに登場し、2ビルボードのメインストリームロックトラックチャートで21位、2002年のレアリティのアルバム『Lost Dogs』および2004年の最大ヒットアルバム『Rearviewmirror（Greatest Hits 1991–2003）』にも収録されている。

“Yellow Ledbetter” is a song by the American grunge band Pearl Jam. Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music co-written by bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Mike McCready, “Yellow Ledbetter” was an outtake from the band’s debut album, Ten (1991). “Yellow Ledbetter” was selected by the band to be on the B-side of the 1992 single “Jeremy”, where it was first released. The song eventually found its way onto radio, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song was also included on Pearl Jam’s 2003 B-sides and rarities album Lost Dogs, and on their 2004 greatest hits album Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991–2003).

Pearl Jamは、ザクザク言うソリッドを得意にするギタリストと、クリアサウンドのギタリストがいるから、見応え(聴き応え)あるバンドだと思う。
これにEddie のギターも加わる時があったから贅沢よね？
自由なバンドで、皆が楽しんでいるから、彼らのライブを見ていると、「自分が音を楽しむことが、いかに好きか」と言う事を再確認できるのだ。
そして素直に美しい音色と感じれる自分も好きになる。
そう、全てを好きになれるのだ。

歌詞について
①即興
この【Yellow Ledbetter】は、シカゴ出身のEddie Vedder’sの旧友であるTim Ledbetterという実在していた人物名に由来している。実際に亡くなってしまった人だ。
この曲は暖かい気持ちにさせてくれるサウンドに相反して、歌詞は意味深で暗い。
分かりにくいために、ネイティブであっても多くのファンが、曲の意味を独自に解釈しているの。
一般的な理論だと、ライブの歌詞から引用されているように、この曲は誰かが、肉親が海外の戦争で亡くなったという手紙を受け取ったと内容なの、、、悲しい知らせ。
ライブのガーデンバージョンでは、「兄が箱で帰ってくるのかバッグで帰ってくるのかわからない」と言うのがある。これは、棺桶を意味していてバッグは海外ドラマを見たことある人ならばお馴染みのジッパーがついたあの死体の黒い袋ありますね？『あの黒い袋だろうか？」と言う意味なのです。余り詳しく書かない方が良いかな？
あと2003年5月3日の公式海賊版リリースのペンシルベニア州ステートカレッジでのもので、Eddie Vedder は、
「俺は、この戦争が遠ざかることを望み、試みたが、それはただそこにあり、何も起こらなかった。そんな風にはならなかったんだ。/そして俺の兄弟…奴らは、旗のために戦うように、彼を送り出した。俺はただ、兄貴が箱やバッグに入れられて帰ってくることなんか望んじゃいなかった」と言う悲しいものだ。ここでの奴らは、国家上層部、旗はアメリカですよ。
“I’d like to wish this war away, and I tried, but it just, just don’t happen, don’t happen that way/And my brother…they sent him off to fight for the flag. I just, I don’t hope he comes home in a box or a bag”, and “And I know that he’s just following his path. As long, as long as it’s not a box or a bag.”
もう1つは公式海賊版リリース(？)の2003年7月11日–マサチューセッツ州マンスフィールドのライブでは、
「そして俺は彼が自分の道をたどっていることを知っている。それが箱やバッグでない限り。」と歌っていて、始めの歌詞では、「俺が寝るときに彼のことを思い出し、彼は箱かバッグに入れられて帰ってくるよ」と歌っているなど、ライブによりアレンジがかなり多いバンドである。
Lyraもバンドでは良く歌う場所によって歌詞を変えて笑いを取り超ウケしていたけど(笑)、Eddieの場合はヘヴィな歌詞だから結構、精神的に来たんじゃないかな？
歌詞の意味を咀嚼して吐き出すって結構パワーがいる。良くない人間関係や死をテーマにした歌詞が多いPearl Jamは体力も精神力も強靭な奴らなんだと思う、、、だってあれだけライブ本数が多く、Grunge時代やBrit Pop時代やヒップホップ全盛期やEDMを通り抜けながらも第一線で今も生き残っているのだから。
このようにPearl Jamは、ライブで歌うときに歌詞を変更するのは知られていて、当時Eddie が歌っていたのが1991年のオリジナルの歌詞であるかどうかを判断するのは非常に困難になっているのだ。
LostDogsのライナーノーツで、Mike McCready(ギター)は、
「大まかな何かに基づいているリフ…『Ten』のセッションでやったね。俺は綺麗だなって思ったよ、Eddieはその場で歌詞を作って行き、俺たちはそれを見守った。俺にはまだ何が出来るか分からなかったけど知りたいとも思わなかったよ。でも俺は大好きな歌詞だよ。ファンのみんなも好きな歌詞さ」と当時の作詞作曲の時の話をリアルに語っていた。
②戦争によるリアルな心の痛み
Eddieはオンラインチャットで、この曲は湾岸戦争の頃に書かれたものであり、「実際には愛国心が強い曲だ」と言っていた。
2008年8月7日、ニュージャージーパフォーミングでのソロパフォーマンスで (ニュージャージー州ニューアークのアーツセンターでも)、Eddieは、聴衆から【Yellow Ledbetter】の意味を説明して！と聞かれたことがある。
最初Eddieはジョークを言った、、、
「待って…歌詞に意味なんかあったっけ？」 とな、、、可愛いEddie。
そして彼は続けて、テーマとしては、最初の湾岸戦争で兄弟が戦地に行ってしまった、シアトル出身の友人を取り上げたと打ち明けて始めたの。
その友人は、彼の兄弟が戦争で亡くなったことを知らせる「黄色い手紙」をメールで受け取ったらしい。そしてその後、EddieとEddieのその友人は散歩に出かけた。
この散歩でEddieの友人は、アメリカ国旗がたなびいている家のポーチに座る人々を見た時に、「別の見た目」になってしまったと言っている。
友人は立ち止まり、敬礼するかのように旗に身振りで示したという。だが、ポーチの人々は彼の外見(多分、当時のGrunge風なのかな?)を見て、友人のことを不満気に睨みつけたと言う。
McCreadyは、
「それは最初のレコード『10』の頃に書かれたんだ。Edと俺が一緒に書いたのは、それが2番目だったと思う。スタジオのジャムっていたら出来たもので、Edは、全く本当に歌詞は浮かんでなかったんだ。彼はその場でいくつかのアイデアを思き、そしてそれを俺たちが記録したのさ。どういうわけか、『10』では上手くいかなったんだよね。 当時、俺はちょっとつまらないって思っててさ。(多分、毎日がつまらないと言う意味)。 だからそれが俺たちの最初のレコードに入れる事本当に望んだんだ。でも当時の俺は本当に若くて、この状況を回避できて幸せだったから、その為には、もう何でもしたよ。」
③４つの理論。
ちなみに【YellowLedbette】は、Pearl Jamのたくさんある楽曲の中で、最も議論されている曲の1つだろう。
タイトルだけの出どころは、少なくともつの著名な4つの理論がある。
1.先程、記した、Vedder’sの旧友であるTimLedbetterの名前ということ。
2.「君ができるだけ早く「黄色が良く、赤が良く」と言おうとする古い早口言葉に由来している、と言う理論。
この早口言葉は、数回繰り返すだけで、言葉が乱雑になり、「黄色いリードベター」になりがち。
それを歌詞にわざとしたのかもしれない。乱雑になりがちな歌詞を狙ったんじゃないかな？
3.リードベリーとしても知られるハディレドベッターへのオマージュ、と言う理論。
レッドベリーは1930年代にいた、ブルースの先駆的なミュージシャンだ。だが後にロックの殿堂に入ったのにも関わらず、刑務所に入り、獄中間に彼の音楽の多くをレコーディングしたと言う変わった人物でもあった。（罪状は、最初はピストルを携行し、次に自分の親戚の1人を殺害。理由は、女性をめぐって戦った為らしい)
4.先程、説明した誰かが手紙を受け取り、彼らの兄弟が戦争で死んだことを知るストーリー。先程記述した様に、この種類の死亡報告の場合、通信はしばしば黄色い封筒で送られていた事から。この理論は、Live at theGardenバージョンの「彼は兄が箱で帰ってくるか、、、」と言うEddieの言葉のバリエーションによって非常に信じられている理論である。

歌詞が良く変わるし、早口になるし、音質が悪い場合があるライブ音源で聞いたり、普通に録音したバージョンでも理解するのがかなり難しいのが分かって頂けたと思う。
Pearl Jam のファン組織であるTenClubは、ファンから定期的に手紙を受け取り、「本物の」歌詞が何であるかについてのヒントを提供するように言われる事が多いの。
Epic Records が1993年に日本のCDシングル【Daughter】で【Yellow Ledbetter】をリリースした時に、ファンはそれに含まれている歌詞の小冊子を手に入れようと奮闘したと言う。
だがキム・ニーリーが5 against Oneで指摘しているように、「公式の歌詞でさえ無意味でした…実際、本当の歌詞はありません。Eddie はワンテイクセッション中に即興で演奏したから、頭に浮かんだフレーズを歌っただけなのですから…」と、多くのファンは、即興である為、分からないと考えてる人が多いのだ。
このある意味曖昧な歌詞は、Eddie が言っていることをユーモラスに解釈出来るだろう。
難しく、聞き取りづらいが故に「誤解された歌詞」ビデオを作成するのに良い原因になったと言うことを。
Lyraは個人的に、先程あげた4つの理論を内包した歌詞であり、メインテーマが大切な人の死、兄弟の死だと思う。
世界中のどこかで現在も続く国と国の戦いが生み出す悲劇をEddieは描いたのだ。
映画のワンシーンを見ている様で、聴きながらボーっとシアトルの寒寒した空を思い出して、悲しくなる。

天候云々で人間の感情や気持ちが変わるなんて簡単に言いたくないが、鬱々たるあの灰色の空、寒寒した街の喧騒は、とても人をpessimisticにさせる。
でも人と人がローカルに繋がる良い場所だとも思う。
彼らが見た世界。
Grungeがブームだったあの世界。
あの凍てついた世界で愛する人を失い、敬礼する男性が目に浮かぶ。
あるはずのもの、当たり前にあったものが、突然居なくなってしまうのが戦争だ。
ギターが泣いている。
アメリカと言う世界は、今もこのギターを泣かせる。
これが、私達の欲した世界なのだろうか？

The song title “Yellow Ledbetter” is derived from the actual name of an old friend of Vedder’s from Chicago, named Tim Ledbetter. Although many fans have made their own interpretations of the song’s meaning, a common theory has been that the song is about someone receiving a letter saying that his or her brother had died overseas in war, as cited from the lyrics in the Live at the Garden version “I don’t know whether my brother will be coming home in a box or a bag.” On the official bootleg release of 5/3/03 – State College, Pennsylvania, Vedder sings “I’d like to wish this war away, and I tried, but it just, just don’t happen, don’t happen that way/And my brother…they sent him off to fight for the flag. I just, I don’t hope he comes home in a box or a bag”, and “And I know that he’s just following his path. As long, as long as it’s not a box or a bag.” On the official bootleg release of 7/11/03 – Mansfield, Massachusetts, Vedder sings in the first verse “I think of him when I go to bed, and he’s coming home in a box or a bag.”
Vedder has been known to change the lyrics of the song when singing it live, so it is difficult to know if what he is singing at the time are the original lyrics from 1991. In the liner notes for Lost Dogs, McCready said:
“A riff loosely based on something…I had during the ‘Ten’ sessions. I thought it was pretty. Eddie started making up words on the spot and we kept them. I still don’t know what it’s about and I don’t want to! I love it. Fans like it too!”
Vedder said in an online chat that the song was written around the time of the Gulf War and added that “it’s an anti-patriotic song, actually.” On August 7, 2008, at a solo performance at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey, Vedder took a question from the audience requesting that he explain the meaning of “Yellow Ledbetter”. At first, Vedder joked, “Wait…you mean there’s lyrics?” He went on to talk about how the song took as its subject a friend of his from Seattle whose brother served in the first Gulf War. His friend received a “yellow letter” in the mail informing him that his brother had died in the war. Vedder and his friend then went for a walk. On this walk, the friend, whom Vedder described as “alternative looking”, happened by a house with an American flag flying and people on the porch. He stopped and gestured to the flag, as if to salute it, but the people on the porch glared at him disapprovingly due to his appearance.
McCready says of the song:
“That was written around the time of the first record (Ten). I think that was the second thing Ed and I wrote together. It came out of a jam in the studio and Ed didn’t really have any lyrics. He came up with some ideas right there on the spot, and that’s what we recorded. For some reason, it didn’t make it on Ten. I was kind of bummed at the time. I really wanted it to be on our first record. But at the time, I was really young and just happy to be around this situation, so I did whatever.”
Yellow Ledbetter” may very well be one of the most-debated songs in Pearl Jam’s repertoire. There are at least 4 prominent theories circulating as to the origin of the song title alone, including (but not limited to):
- It is derived from the name of an old friend of Vedder’s from Chicago named Tim Ledbetter. (This theory is strongly supported in Kim Neely’s definitive biography Five Against One.)
- It is derived from an old tongue twister in which you try to say “yellow better, red better” as fast as you can. According to an explanation on Songfacts, “Just a few times repeated, the words become jumbled and you get ‘yellow ledbetter.’ The reason they named the song this is because the lyrics are indistinguishable just like the tongue twister.”
- It is a tribute to Huddie Ledbetter, also known as Lead Belly. Lead Belly was a pioneering Blues musician in the 1930s and, later, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who recorded much of his music while in prison (at first, for carrying a pistol, then for killing one of his own relatives in a fight over a woman).
- It refers to someone receiving a letter and finding out their brother had died in the war (these types of communications were often sent in yellow envelopes). This theory is heavily supported by Eddie’s variation on the words during the Live at the Garden version of “Yellow Ledbetter,” in which he purportedly sang, “I don’t know whether my brother will be coming home in a box or a bag.”
Title aside, the lyrics of “Yellow Ledbetter” are fairly difficult to understand when heard live and even on the recorded version. Pearl Jam’s fan organization, the Ten Club, would regularly receive letters from fans begging them to provide some hint as to what the “real” lyrics were. Thus, when Epic released “Yellow Ledbetter” on a Japanese CD-single of “Daughter” in 1993, fans were scrambling to get their hands on the lyric booklet included with it. However, as Kim Neely points out in Five Against One, “Even the purportedly official lyrics were nonsensical… In fact, there never were any real lyrics. Eddie had simply improvised them during the one-take session, singing whatever phrases happened to pop into his head.”
Today, this ambiguity still leads to the creation of many ‘misheard lyrics’ videos, dedicated to humorously interpreting whatever Vedder is saying.
