生まれた時からロック好き。

Lyraの初恋の人は、CheapTrick チープトリックのRobin。

幼稚園からずっと憧れている人はJim Morrisonジム・モリソン、、、と来たら「素敵だな」と憧れる女性もいるわけで、、、。

 Vocalist としてならば、迷わず Janis Jooplin ジャニス・ジョップリンなの。

でも、ファッションとかルックス込みで歌手としても引っくるめて「格好良いなあ」と意識したのは、Madonna でも  Lady Gaga レディ・ガガでもなく、

Edie Sedgwick イーディ・セジウィック(鼻歌しか歌ってないか！)でもなく、彼女が初めてだったと思う。

ジプシーみたいに情熱的で悲しげなアーティスト。彼女に憧れて来たの。

今日Lyraが和訳＆紹介するのは、イングランド、ロンドンで結成されたロックバンド、Fleetwood Mac フリート・ウッドマック( →  Judas Priest  & Fleetwood Mac 【The Green Manalishi】 about Difference. 和訳 Lyrics参照。)

このバンドのヴォーカリストとして、バンド最盛期にいたのが、Lyraが憧れていた女性シンガーソングライター& ヴォーカリストのStevie Nicks スティーヴィー・ニックス（Stephanie Lynn “Stevie” Nicks , 1948年5月26日 – ）。

バンド自体は、1967年に結成と50年以上のキャリアを持ち Chicken Shack チキンシャック、 Savoy Brown サヴォイブラウンと並ぶブリティッシュ・ブルーズロックの３大バンドの一つと言われて来たバンドだ。

1970年代後半辺りから、サウンドの路線をソフトロックに変えたことにより(Stevie と彼女のRicky が加入したことにより)、大成功を収め、世界中に知れ渡り支持されて来た人気バンドでもある。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は【Gypsy】。

昨日紹介したアメリカのドラマ 【アメリカンホラーストーリー シーズン8 第5話】(ネタバレ感想あらすじ Enter Stevie Nicks! スティーヴィー・ニックス登場！)で出演し、Stevie が歌っていたのが、この曲だった。

小さい時に聞いたのとは、また一味ちがう印象を受けたから、今日紹介したくなったの。

Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band, formed in London in 1967. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands. In 1998, select members of Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

“Gypsy” is a song by the rock group Fleetwood Mac. Written by Stevie Nicks around 1979, the earliest demo recordings were made in early 1980 with Tom Moncrieff for possible inclusion on her debut solo album Bella Donna. However, when Nicks’ friend Robin Anderson died of leukemia, the song took on a new significance and Nicks held it over for Fleetwood Mac. “Gypsy” was the second single release and second biggest hit from the Mirage album, following “Hold Me”, reaching a peak of number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks.

涙が溢れた。

久しぶりに聴いてみたら、メロディの優しさと、ノスタルジックな歌詞にハートが揺さぶられ、小さい時の自分が蘇り、懐かしさで温かい気持ちになった。

でも、昔聴いた時とは違う。

数年前に聴いた時とも違う。

上っ面だけではない、深いところまで歌詞が入って来て涙が溢れて来た。

多くのことを感じ、生を感じ、死を見て来たからこそ、やっとStevie Nicksの歌詞が理解出来たのかも知れない。

理解出来ている、とずっと思っていたの。

でも、全然だった。

甘かった。

人は傷ついて初めて人に優しく出来る、、、

そんな言葉、馬鹿みたいだと思っていた。

でも今ならば、わかる。

頭で考えるのとは違う、ハートで感じると言うことは。

この【Gypsy】は、感じる曲なのだ。

生きていくってこういうことなのだ。

1967年、「ジョン・メイオール&ザ・ブルース・ブレイカーズ」のメンバーだったPeter Green ピーター・グリーン（ギター）とMick Fleetwood ミック・フリートウッド（ドラム）を中心に、Bob Browning ボブ・ブランニング（ベース）、Jeremy Spencer ジェレミー・スペンサー（ギター）の4人で活動を開始し、直ぐに Bob の代わりに John McVie ジョン・マクヴィー（ベース）が加入した所から、現在のFleetwood Mac が始まった。

Peterの 体調が不安定さやLSD 乱用でツアー中に問題ができたり、突如脱退するなど、バンドは存続の危機に立たされながらも、メンバーを変え(変えたメンバーも精神不安定になったり、ジャンキーになったり)、メンバーの出入りが激しいながらも、コンスタントにアルバムリリースや、ツアーをしてバンド活動を精力的に続けていく。

John の妻で元 Chicken Shack チキン・シャックの Christen McVie クリスティン・マクヴィーと、オーディションによりアメリカ人ギタリストの Bob Welch ボブ・ウェルチを加入させるが、Bobがアル中になり脱退せざる終えなくなり、Bob に変わるフロントマンとして、 Mick Fleetwood と John McVie が 目をつけたのが、新作レコーディングエンジニアのオーディションを通じて知ったアメリカ人男女Duoの「Buckingham & Nicks バッキンガム・ニックス」だった。

1974年12月、Mickは、初めLindsey Buckingham リンジー・バッキンガムのギターとヴォーカルだけに惹かれ電話をしたと言う。

だが、Lindsey は、「バンドに加入するならばガールフレンドであるデュオのパートナーのStevie Nicks スティーヴィー・ニックスと必ず一緒に」と言う条件を出した。

このことで２人セットで加入し、新生Fleetwood Macが誕生したのだ。

1975年に10thアルバム『 Fantastic Mac』リリース。【Say You Love Me】などヒット曲を出し、アルバムは全米1位を獲得し今までにない成功を収める。

優しく安心感のある暖かい歌声のChristine に、二枚目ギタリストでありポップで張りのある声を持つシンガーの Lindsey、可憐なルックスとワイルドなしゃがれ声が哀愁味を帯びた個性派シンガーのStevie というキャラクター割りが見事に出来た(笑)、3人の個性がぶつかり合い、調和するボーカルのバラエティとハーモニーは、レコードでもライブでもバンドの大きな魅力となった。

1977年には、最大のヒット作となる11thアルバム『Rumour うわさ』リリースされ、シングルカットされた【Go Your Own Way】(邦題: Own Way)、【Dreams】(グループにとって唯一の全米1位シングル・Billboard Hot 100)など数多くの楽曲が大ヒットする。

そして、このアルバムは31週間に渡って全米1位(1977年・年間チャート1位・Billboard Top 200)に輝き、1,700万枚といわれる史上空前のセールスを記録し、一躍スーパースターの座に上り詰めた。

翌年、同アルバムでグラミー賞を受賞。

12thアルバム『牙 (タスク)』(全米4位)、『ライヴ』、13thアルバム『ミラージュ』(全米1位) の3枚のアルバムをリリースし、ワールドツアーは盛況を重ね、観客動員の面ではスーパースターとのポジションを維持。

1980年代は、メンバー各自のソロ活動が活発化し、全米アルバムチャートでNo.1を記録したStevie の作品を筆頭に、LindseyもChristineも、ソロでTOP10ヒット。

バンドもソロも絶好調だったが、実際には、この時期メンバー同士の関係が悪化。

Stevie の薬物中毒克服のためのリハビリ施設入り、バンドのゴタゴタや妻との離婚、父の死など公私にわたるトラブルに疲れ切ってコカインとブランデーに溺れたMickが破産するなど、バンド周辺でトラブルが絶えなかった。

1987年の14thアルバム『タンゴ・イン・ザ・ナイト』(全米7位)では、音楽面におけるLindsey の献身的な貢献もあり、いつも通りのヒットを記録したが、アルバム発表直後に彼は脱退してしまう。

Lindseyの不在をChristineと、特にStevie を大きくフィーチャーすることで補う演出がされていたツアーをしていたが、1990年に、その２人も今後バンドのライブツアーに参加しないことを表明。

1992年、Bill Clinton ビル・クリントンの大統領選挙キャンペーンソングに「Don’t Stop」が採用された為、1993年 クリントンを支援するためにアルバム『Rumor 噂』発表当時の黄金期メンバー5人で一時的に再結成ライブを行う。が、ライブ終了後、ほぽ全員(LindseyやStevieなど)が脱退した。

MickとJohnは、新メンバーを入れて活動するがヒットには至らなかった。

1997年のLindseyのレコーディングにMickが参加したことがきっかけで、再結成し、ライブアルバム『Dance』がアルバム1981年リリースのこのアルバム『Mirage』以来の大ヒットになる。

1998年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たした。

2014年には、Christine も復帰して16年ぶりのワールドツアー『On With The Show』を2015年まで続け、Lindseyが2018年に降板したが、元Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers のメンバーも入れて現在も活動し続けている。

 

【Gypsy】は、Stevie の個人的な想いを深く表した曲だ。

歌詞の随所にStevie の愛したものが散りばめられているの。

Stevie が愛した店、そこには、Janis Joplin (Piece Of My Heart / Janis Joplin】 和訳 Love hurts. 胸がこわれそう)や、Jefferson Airplane の Grace (Somebody To Love 和訳 Psychedelic Minds 歌詞の本当の意味を教えよう！)も足繁く通った。

そして、レースと紙の花で飾ったのは、まだデビューしていないお金が全くなかったStevieとLindseyが一緒に寝ていた床に直に引いたキングサイズのマットレス。

Stevieは Lindseyに連れられてFleetwood Macに入ってからは、一気にスターダムにのし上がった。

めまぐるしい日々の中で、いつしか原点回帰したい、、、そう思うようになったと言う。

きっと、それは、本来の自分を見失わないためだったのではないだろうか？

Lyraには、Stevieの成功の裏での人間関係(メンバー間のいざこざなど) の苦しみや疲れや、慌ただしい毎日によるストレスから、自己を確立できなくなっていたのではないか？と思える。

Fleewood Macは才能の塊の集団だ。

特に彼らが加入してからは、個性のぶつかり合いが凄かったらしいし、噂だけでなくとも、アーティストのワガママや自己主張の強さは想像がつく。

その争いの中で、成功の喜びはかけがえのないものだっただろう。

だが、どこかで孤独を感じていたに違いない。

原点回帰したい自分が、この【Gypy】を書かせたのだ。

そして、本当の自分を確認した。

書くことによってStevieは救われたのだろう。

自分の想い出の場所を辿る中で、夢を見て追い続けていた自分を、再確認したに違いない。

そして、そんな辛い時にでも、愛する人がいた。

Lindseyとの貧しいけれど夢と愛と作詞作曲する２人のクリエイティブな生活は、彼女のルーツだ。

そして、どんな時も話し相手になってくれた友の姿も、その想い出の中にずっといるのだ。

タイトルの【Gypsy 】は、そのままのジプシーで良いだろう、、、

だが Lyraは、あえて元々の意味である「放浪する人」にしてみた。

夢を叶えようともがきながら生きていく人間は、どこか目標を探しながら放浪する人間のようだからだ。

Stevieが本来の自分に、再び出逢い自分の音楽への愛を再確認する歌だと感じたからそう、訳してみました。

音楽が大好きでおじいちゃんのそばで歌いながら歌手になることを夢見た少女の頃を思い出して、

メジャーデビュー目指して彼氏とベッドレスもないからと、床に直おきしたキングサイズのマットレスに、レースや花を飾り証明も直置きの２人の部屋は、みすぼらしくてもきっと愛と希望に溢れていたに違いないから。

そして、自分の愚痴や悩みを聞いてくれる彼の娘だけは、ずっと信じられる。

その愛を全てこの一曲でLyraは感じられる。すごい曲だと思う。

だから、聴いていて涙が溢れて来たのだ。

素晴らしい曲に、素晴らしい歌詞が合わさった時、人は涙すると思うの。

きっと頭のおかしな人は、そんなLyraのことをまた変なふうに言うだろう。

でも良いの。わかってくれる人々がいるから。

音楽を愛し、感じ、喜び、泣き、怒り、笑う。

それを一緒に話し合える人々に会えて嬉しい。

そして、美しい曲を聴かせてくれる愛があるStevieにも感謝してるの。

で書いたけど、Stevieは可愛らしく、相変わらずミステリアスで、妖精のようであり、魔女らしかった(笑)。

キュートな叔母さまになったStevieだけど、アカペラで歌う彼女は少しか弱いイメージだった。

In 2017, Nicks recorded an acoustic version to serve as the theme song for the Netflix drama series Gypsy.

There are two points of inspiration behind “Gypsy”, as stated by Stevie Nicks, the first of which is a point of nostalgia for her: her life before Fleetwood Mac. Before joining them, Nicks lived with Lindsey Buckingham, who would also join Fleetwood Mac. Nicks and Buckingham were partners in both the musical and romantic sense; however, only their musical partnership has survived. Nicks met Buckingham at a high school party, where he was singing “California Dreaming” by the Mamas and the Papas. Nicks joined in with perfect harmony, then they introduced themselves. They didn’t see each other again until college, where they started a relationship and started a duo called Buckingham Nicks. They barely got by with the income from Nicks’ work as a waitress and cleaning lady.

They could not afford a bed frame, so they slept on a single mattress, directly on the floor. Nicks says the mattress was decorated in lace, with a vase and a flower at its side. Whenever she feels her famous life getting to her, she goes “back to her roots,” and takes her mattress off the frame and puts it “back to the floor” and decorates it with “some lace, and paper flowers.” It takes her back to the days when she had no wealth—back to herself as a poor gypsy. Some speculate the rest of this song is directed at Buckingham, assuming the lyrics depict her leaving him. On March 31, 2009, Nicks gave an interview to EntertainmentWeekly discussing the inspiration for the song:

In the old days, before Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey [Buckingham] and I had no money, so we had a king-size mattress, but we just had it on the floor. I had old vintage coverlets on it, and even though we had no money it was still really pretty… Just that and a lamp on the floor, and that was it—there was a certain calmness about it. To this day, when I’m feeling cluttered, I will take my mattress off of my beautiful bed, wherever that may be, and put it outside my bedroom, with a table and a little lamp.

On March 25, 2009, during a show in Montreal on Fleetwood Mac’s Unleashed Tour, Stevie Nicks gave a short history of the inspiration behind Gypsy. She explained it was written sometime in 1978-79, when the band had become “very famous, very fast,” and it was a song that brought her back to an earlier time, to an apartment in San Francisco where she had taken the mattress off her bed and put it on the floor. To contextualize, she voiced the lyrics: “So I’m back, to the velvet underground. Back to the floor, that I love. To a room with some lace and paper flowers. Back to the gypsy that I was.” Those are the words: ‘So I’m back to the velvet underground’—which is a clothing store in downtown San Francisco, where Janis Joplin got her clothes, and Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane. It was this little hole in the wall, amazing, beautiful stuff—’back to the floor that I love, to a room with some lace and paper flowers, back to the gypsy that I was.'”

The second subject of this song is the message as a tribute to someone’s passing. On October 5, 1982, Robin Snyder Anderson, Stevie’s best friend, died of leukemia.

Nicks met and befriended Robin Snyder at Arcadia High School in Los Angeles, CA when they were either 14 or 15. Snyder, who had theatrical interests, became Nicks’ speech therapist. Videos of the two preparing for concerts are easily accessible over the internet, for instance, one video in particular where Snyder helps Nicks prepare for a concert during the “Rumours” tour. Not only did she help her with her singing, but she was also her confidante, and the person who knew her best. According to Carol Ann Harris’ book, “Storms”, Snyder could calm her down within just a fraction of a second.

The night before her “Bella Donna” was released, Nicks received a terrifying call from Snyder saying she had leukemia, and the doctors thought she could only last three months. Even more horrifying to Nicks was the news that Snyder had gotten pregnant, as to leave her husband, Kim Anderson, with something after she left. If she aborted the child, she could’ve possibly lived for another year. However, the baby was born (three months-premature), and Snyder died three days later. Nicks was on tour.  The only person Nicks felt could understand her grief was Kim Anderson. He felt the same way, and out of grief, as well as the duty to give the baby (named Matthew) a good home, the two married. Three months later, Nicks filed for divorce, after she “received a sign” from Snyder telling her to get out of there. Nicks has stated that she has put Matthew through college and told him about what had happened many times. As Snyder was dying, Nicks dedicated “Gypsy” to her. Nicks found it extremely difficult to sing the song in concert.
