“New Divide” is a song by American rock band Linkin Park. The song is released as a single and was recorded specifically for Michael Bay’s film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The song serves as the film’s main theme, and was released as a single on May 18, 2009.

この曲は、先程触れたように映画『Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen』の為に書かれた曲で、テーマ曲でもある。大人気映画のシリーズな為、彼らの人気は超メジャーなものへとステップアップして行った。
批評家からも肯定的なレビューを受け、Linkin Park のディスコグラフィーの中で最も絶賛された曲の1つであり続けている。これは、米国のロックソング、オルタナティヴソング、ホットメインストリームロックトラックを同時にランキングも上回っている数少ない曲の1つでもあるのだ。
勿論バンドの最高のチャート曲の1つであり、US Billboard Hot100の6位にまで上り詰めた。
仮題が【Megatron】だったと言うのは、個人的にLyraは意外だった。だって映画の敵の宇宙生命体のBoss (親分)の名前だからね(この上に又、上の親分はいますが)。
歌詞から考えれば、良い人側の苦悩の歌。だから敵には思えない歌詞と、この仮題はちょっと相反するものだから違和感ありあり。やはり【New Divide】の方が良い。タイトルも良いところに収まって良かったね、とChesterに言いたいな、生きていたら。
この【New Divide】は、トランスフォーマーサウンドトラックの最初のシングル曲だ。トレーラーでは短時間に圧縮(笑)して再生されていた。Mike Sinoda は、2009年3月28日にこの曲のリリースを最初にほのめかし、「ここ数週間、とても楽しい新曲に取り組んできました。曲の背景はレイヤードで構築されています。ヘビーなシンセサイザーと[バンドのドラマー]Rob Pordon ロブ・ボードンによる鋭いパフォーマンスがあります。」と書いていた。
4月24日、Mikeは映画のスコア作曲家であるHans Zimmer と協力して、【New Divide】のさまざまな解釈を書き、映画の続編についておしゃべりなMichael Bay と話し合ったとき、監督は「Linkin Parkが大好きです…彼らは本当に 【New Divide】を配信した。これは映画の強さに完全に一致する素晴らしい曲です。」と語っている。
イントロの一部は、最後のTransformers トレーラーでも一部使用された。 印象的な曲だから採用されたに違いない。頭にに残るサウンドだからだ。Steve Jablonsky の 『Revenge of the Fallen』の楽譜からの【NEST】は、【New Divide】からのインストルメンタルの抜粋を特徴としているのもそのせいだろう。
グラミー賞受賞歴のあるHans Simmerと曲を再構築して行った結果、この曲は映画の中で目立つように取り上げられて行く。エンドクレジット中でも使用された曲に加えて、曲のインストルメンタルクリップが映画全体で数回再生されるようになった。

影響力
この曲は後にNHLのサンノゼシャークスのテーマ/オープニングソングとして採用されたり、Medal of HonorE3マルチプレイヤートレーラーのバックグラウンドミュージックとしても使用されたり、製作者側からも人気のある曲になった。
この曲のライブバージョンは、【The Catalyst】のB面と、日本でリリースされた【A ThousandSuns】のボーナストラックとして収録されている。
スタジオバージョンもあり、そちらも【Iridescent】のB面として収録。 2012年9月4日、【New Divide】、【Breaking The Habit】、【Shadow Of The Day】【Bourn It Down】が、音楽リズムのダウンロードコンテンツとして『LynkinPark Pack02」でリリースされた。

【New Divide】はリリース時に高い評価を受けた。ファンは、映画のサウンドトラックとしての適性と魅力を称賛した。中には批判するレビューアーもいたが、その曲の批判の多くは、今までのLinkin Park のシングルとあまりにも類似していると言う構造に関するものが多かった。
Transformersに使用された【WhatI’veDone】と非常によく似ている。そのため、YouTubeに投稿された動画の中には、2つの曲の構造が類似していることを示してるのがある。
たしかにLinkin Parkらしい楽曲で、どこかで聞いたような曲でもある。良い意味でLinkin Parkの個性を凝縮したサウンドなのだ。
BillboardMagazineのChrisWilliamsは、「 【New Divide】は、SFのジャンルにぴったりです。広大でムーディーで未来的な曲です。リードボーカルのChester Benington は、いつものロックエッジとメロディーに焦点を当てたポップボーカルのバランスをうまく取りながら、よりシンプルなボーカルパフォーマンスを披露しています。これは歓迎すべきリターンです。それはバンドのファン層を満足させ、新しいファンも呼び込むはずです。」とレビューしていたが、予想通り、この曲は大ヒット。
この曲のおかげで、今までLinkin Parkを知らなかった人たちのハートまでも捕まえることが出来たのだ。

歌詞について
一般的にタイトルというものは、署名者と受取る人の間に存在する感情的なギャップを象徴する比喩であるようだ。そして、それらの関係の性質は特定されていない。
【New Divide】は、ロマンスに基づいていると論理的に解釈することができる。
基本的に、歌手と受取人(聞き手)はロマンチックなパートナーであると理解出来る。そして、両者の間に横たわっているのがこの【New Divide】である。
したがって、ほとんどの場合、彼が表現している感情は、この個人と和解したいという願望だ。そしてそうすることで、それらの間に存在する【New Divide】=「新しい分裂」は確かに横断される。つまり互いに到達しあえると言うことだ。
この歌詞の意味がサッパリ分からないと言う人が多いが、遠回しに感じる言い回しだからだと思う。対象がちゃんと書かれていないからだ。
Chesterの意図か、たまたま偶然こうなった蚊は今となっては明確ではないが、LyraにはChesterがわざと聞き手による誤差が生じても良いから、普通に聞いたら意味がわからなくなったとしても、歌詞の内容を曖昧にしたのだと思う。
受け取る側の立場によりかわるようにしたのだ。
普通に耳にした人は、人間関係の上手くいかない主人公が、和解を求めているように聞こえるし、恋愛がダメになった人のラブソングに聞こえるだろう。
そして映画を見た人には、主人公の大学生と仲良しになったはずのオートボット達の仲違いをどうにしかしたいと思っている両者の歌、もしくはそれを願う観客の気持ちにも感じるだろう。
中にはファンとChester達に感じる人もいるかもしれない。
バラエティに富む解釈が生まれる曲。C#esterの狙いだとしたら、彼は皆が分かり合える世界を願っていたのだ。
彼は、対象が誰であれ、話し合うことでの和解を求めていたのだろう。又、それを願っていたのだ。
不可能だと思えるが、話し合って、互いの欠点を補いながら、分かり合えると信じていたのかもしれない。
暗闇の中を歩いていたChesterの最後の希望だったのか？
人を(聞き手=ファンを) 信じて生きて行く。分かり合えると。
Chesterのハートには、純粋な希望だけが輝いていたのだ。
ぽっかりと空いた空虚な心、暗闇の中を歩いて行く、生きる糧だったのだ。

It received positive reviews from professional critics and remains one of the most critically acclaimed songs of Linkin Park’s discography. It is one of the few songs to top the US Rock Songs, Alternative Songs and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks at the same time. It is one of the band’s highest charting songs, peaking at number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its working title was “Megatron”.
Linkin Park’s “New Divide” was included on the first Transformers soundtrack and it was played in the trailer for a short second. Mike Shinoda first alluded to “New Divide” on March 28, 2009, stating “We’ve been working on a new song in the past couple of weeks that has been a lot of fun. The backdrop for the song is built on layered, heavy synths and a sharp performance by [the band’s drummer] Rob Bourdon.” On April 24, Shinoda revealed that they were working with film score composer Hans Zimmer, writing various interpretations of “New Divide” to serve as thematic elements for the film. When discussing the Transformers sequel with Blabbermouth, Michael Bay said “I love Linkin Park… they really delivered with ‘New Divide’ — it’s a great song that perfectly matches the film’s intensity.” Parts of the intro were used in the final Transformers trailer.

The cue “NEST” from Steve Jablonsky’s Revenge of the Fallen music score features instrumental excerpts from “New Divide”. Linkin Park worked with award-winning composer Hans Zimmer to re-work “New Divide” in the musical score. As a result, the song was featured prominently in the film with instrumental clips of it played several times throughout the film in addition to the song being played during the end credits. The song was later adopted as the theme/opening song for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. The song also plays as the background music for the Medal of HonorE3 multiplayer trailer.
A live version of the song was included as a b-side to “The Catalyst” and a bonus track for the Japanese release of A Thousand Suns. The studio version of the song was also included as the b-side to “Iridescent”.
On September 4, 2012, “New Divide”, along with “Breaking the Habit”, “Shadow of the Day”, and “Burn It Down”, were released in the “Linkin Park Pack 02” as downloadable content for the music rhythm video game, Rock Band 3.
The instrumental version of this song was also featured on The Weather Channel’s Local on the 8’s playlist in January and February 2012.
New Divide” received critical acclaim upon its release. Fans lauded it for its aptitude and appeal as the movie’s soundtrack. Much of the song’s criticism from reviewers is that of the structure, claiming it is too similar to past Linkin Park singles, as well as sounding very similar to “What I’ve Done” which was used in Transformers. Videos posted on YouTube show similarities in structure between the two songs. One of the reviews was from Chris Williams of BillboardMagazine, who wrote:
” ‘New Divide’ fits the sci-fi genre: spacious, moody and futuristic. Lead vocalist Chester Bennington gives one of his more straightforward vocal performances, deftly balancing his usual rock edge with a more melody-focused pop vocal. It’s a welcome return that should satisfy the band’s fan base and bring in some new fans as well.”
And in general, the title appears to be a metaphor which is symbolic of the emotional gap which exists between the signer and the addressee. And although the nature of their relationship is not specified, “New Divide” can logically be interpreted as being based on a romance. Basically, the singer and the addressee can be understood as being romantic partners. And there currently seems to be some type of beef between them. So for the most part, the sentiment he is expressing is a desire to make peace with this individual. And in doing, the “new divide” which exists between them will indeed be traversed.
