今日Lyraが和訳 & 解説するのは、何回もこのブログでその魅力を話して来たGrunge グランジのバンド、アメリカ合衆国 シアトル出身の Alice In Chains アリス・イン・チェインズ。( AIC, アリチェンとも呼ばれる)。

1987年、レイン・ステイリーとジェリー・カントレルを中心に、シアトルで結成され、1990年1stアルバム『フェイスリフト』でデビュー。
Grunge 全盛期1990年代に人気を誇り、全世界で3500万枚以上のアルバムセールスを記録。
Grungeの聖地 シアトル出身であり同時期に活動&デビューしたNirvana ニルヴァーナ、Parl Jam パールジャムとともにGrunge グランジ、や Alternative Rock Movement オルタナティブロックのブームの重要なバンドである。
Grunge 御三家なるものを作るならば、この３つのバンドだろうね。
本当はこのブログで何回も和訳&解説しているLyraが好きなChris Cornellが居たSound Gardenを入れたい所だが多分御三家にしなくちゃいけないなら(する必要ないんだけど) このAlice In Chains が入る、と感じるのは、ガツンとメジャーに売れたからだろう。
twin vocal ツインボーカルに重厚なサウンドは類を見ないでしょう？
当時のGrungeは沢山バンドが出て来たが、どれもネルシャツ、ロン毛で地味なルックスだから、話題性勝ち、インパクト勝ちが否めなかった。
勿論、目立ったのはルックスやバンド編成だけではない。
やはり音だ。
難解さが全くない、キャッチーなメロディに覆いかぶさる強くて重いサウンドは、どこか儚げで移ろいやすくLyraは刹那くなる。
胸を締め付けられるようだ。
特に今日和訳した 【Would?】は、このブログを始めたばかりの頃に「Grunge グランジの魅力について」で紹介した曲だった。
和訳しておこうと思ったの。
素敵なサウンド。
でも悲しくて涙が出る歌詞だ。

Alice in Chains is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1987 by guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney, who then recruited bassist Mike Starr and lead vocalist Layne Staley. Starr was replaced by Mike Inez in 1993.
William DuVall joined the band in 2006 as co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, replacing Staley, who died in 2002.
The band took its name from Staley’s previous group, the glam metal band Alice N’ Chains.
Would? is an EP by Alice in Chains. Its titular song was produced, engineered, and mixed by Dave Jerden and first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 movie Singles—where the members of Alice in Chains make a cameo appearance—and later appeared on the band’s album Dirt, also released in 1992.
The song was included on the compilation albums Nothing Safe: Best of the Box (1999), Music Bank(1999), Greatest Hits (2001), and The Essential Alice in Chains (2006).

悲しみが湧き上がる。
最初の歌詞の２行は、聖書ぽく訳したのは、ノアの箱船に出てくる洪水や、神にも取れるワードがサビや歌詞のあちこちにあるから。
この【Would?】は、Guitar Vocal (ストレートロン毛の方のVocal ) のJerry Cantrellが仲良しだったバンド仲間の Mother Love Bone マザーラブボーン の Vocalist 、Andrew Wood アンドリュー・ウッドについて書いた歌詞だ。
タイトルの【Would?】は、AndrewのWood から来ている。
Andrewは1990年にヘロインのオーバードーズで亡くなった。
Jerryは、この曲を作っていた時にAndrewのことを良く思い出して考えていたらしい。
Lyraが好きだったChrhs CornellとJerryとAndrewでよくつるんで遊んでいたから。
いつもただ、ただ楽しかったと言う。
朗らかで明るいAndrewを失った悲しみは深い。
そして、そんな彼の死に対してああだこうだいう輩に腹が立ってしまうらしい。
その有る事無い事を言いふらされてしまう理不尽さに対する怒りや、
死んだ者への哀れみから生まれたのがこの【Would?】なんだ。
Lyraは、このVideoを何十回、何百回と見て来た。
映画『Singles シングルス』が好きでこのサウンドトラックCDもヘビロテで聴いていた。
宿題をしながら、
恋をしながら、
笑いながら、
泣きながら。
人の想いは簡単には無くならない。
その人間が生きている間は勿論のこと、
その人間が関わった人間との共有した時間が長ければ長いほど、思い出は鮮明に皆にも記憶され、
本人がこの世から旅立っても残された人間が生きている限り、想いは伝心され続いていくのだ。
良い想いにしろ、
悪しき想いにしろ。
そこにサウンドが介在していたならばなおさら。
その時の曲を、サウンドを聴くと全ての感情や感覚が蘇る。
今いる時空間は崩れ落ち、そのサウンドを聴いていた時代に引き戻されるのだ。
まるで引き潮のように。

Jerry はそれかわかっていたのかわからないが、この歌詞の男の声は、死者の叫びのようにこだましている。
聴いてるものを引っ張り込むのだ。
この歌詞は、蘇りはしない自分の生への渇望と叫びにLyraは聞こえる。
生きている者の歌じゃないね。
Jerryが、感じるAndrewの叫びなんじゃないかしら？
死にたくないのに死んでしまったものが、「あの時、俺がちゃんとしていたら、君は助けてくれた？」と言う後悔の叫びに聞こえるよ。
この世で何回も何千回も何億回も繰り返される過ち、後悔。
それを避けて生きていくのは難しい事なの？
違うでしょう。

自分が自分らしく生きていくためには、Drugはやってはダメだし、自分で解決せずに、他のものに頼ると言う逃げはダメだ。
何の解決にもならないし、逃げられないんだよ。
それに、一時の快楽や逃避のためにクスリは有効じゃないんだよ。
事実と向き合い戦うことが解決なのに、、、。
Grungeの時代のVocalistが次々に天国へ召されていく。
この曲のモデルのAndrew Wood然り、
この曲を歌っているAlice In Chainsの髪の短い方のVocalistのLayne Staley 然り、
皆んないなくなるの？
あんなに素晴らしい歌声や才能を持っていたのに、、、。
残されたものにも死んだ者の悲しみや苦悩が残されてしまうんだよ？
この【Would?】のように。
何回も蘇り、後悔が募る。
そんな想いをさせないで欲しい。
もう二度と起きないで欲しい、、、
寿命を全うしない死は、残されたものに苦しみを、
多分、死にゆく者にも苦しみが残る。
後悔という苦しみ。
だから、幸せに。
私たちの生を貫こう。
嫌な事ばかりだけど、自分と向き合う。
困難と立ち向かう。
負けても良い。
格闘しただけ自分は強くなる。
そして、手に入れた強さで愛する者を抱きしめよう。

I was thinking a lot about Andrew Wood at the time. We always had a great time when we did hang out, much like Chris Cornell and I do. There was never really a serious moment or conversation, it was all fun. Andy was a hilarious guy, full of life and it was really sad to lose him. But I always hate people who judge the decisions others make. So it was also directed towards people who pass.

Although widely associated with grunge music, the band’s sound incorporates heavy metal elements.
Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released five studio albums, three EPs, three live albums, four compilations, two DVDs, 31 music videos and 29 singles.
The band is known for its distinctive vocal style, which often included the harmonized vocals between Staley and Cantrell (and later between Cantrell and William DuVall).
Cantrell started to sing lead vocals on the 1992 acoustic EP Sap, and his role continued to grow in the following albums, making Alice in Chains a two-vocal band.
Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 20 million records worldwide, and over 14 million records in the US alone, with two No. 1 albums and six Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart.
The band has had 16 Top 10 songs on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, 5 No. 1 hits, and nine Grammy Award nominations.
Their debut album, Facelift, featuring the hit single “Man In The Box”, was released in 1990 and has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA, selling over two million copies.
In 1992, the band’s second album, Dirt, was released to critical acclaim and was certified quadruple platinum. Their second acoustic EP, Jar of Flies, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1994, becoming the first ever EP and first Alice in Chains release to top the charts, and it has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA. The band’s third album, Alice in Chains debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1995 and has been certified double platinum.
Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity from 1996 onwards due to Staley’s substance abuse, which resulted in his death in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 for a live benefit show, performing with a number of guest vocalists. They toured in 2006, with William DuVall taking over as lead vocalist full-time.
The new line-up released the band’s fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue, in 2009, which received gold certification by the RIAA and two Grammy nominations.
Their fifth studio album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, was released in 2013 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The band toured extensively and released several videos in support of these albums.
Alice in Chains is currently working on their sixth studio album, set for release in the summer of 2018.
