毎年、何ともやるせない気持ちになる日。
GrungeのKingだったと、Lyraは勝手に思っている。
まあ、Kingと言うよりリーダーとか、Boss って感じかな？
ChrisとChrisがいたSoundgardenがいたからこそ、Grungeが生まれたんだって思っている。
他の人々が、「Grungeを代表するのは、他のあのバンドだろ？」って言っても。

今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、アメリカ合衆国ワシントン州シアトル出身のシンガー、ソングライター、ギタリストである、Chris Cornell クリス・コーネル (本名：Christpher John Boyle クリストファー・ジョン・ボイル1964年7月20日 – 2017年5月17日）。
Soundgardenのヴォーカリストであり、作詞作曲もしていたフロントマンであり、解散後は、ソロやAudioslaveでも活躍していた。
声域が、4オクターブにも及ぶことで有名な歌手としても知られている。

今日Lyraが和訳する曲は、Chris Cornellが、バンド解散後にAudioslaveを結成する間の、ソロ活動をしていた時期の1st アルバムである1999年リリースの『Euphoria Morning』(後に『Euphoria Mourning』と変えて再リリースされる) に収録されているデビューシングル【Can’t Change Me】(1999年9月21日リリース)。

The song peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks,and at No. 7 on the Alternative Songs chart. A music video was produced for the song. “Can’t Change Me” was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

このミュージック・ビデオのChrisってカッコよ過ぎて、何回見たことか〜♪
髪長いときのChrisも好きだけだし、このサラサラヘアのショートヘアも好きだな。
このソロになって初のシングルである【Can’t Change Me】の時期だけ、拝めるChrisのサラサラ・ショートヘアを堪能しておくれ〜w。
「何故、こんな色気があるのかしら？」って毎回見るたび思うのは、Lyraだけじゃないよね？
他のSoundgardenの時も、Audioslaveの時も、Temple of the Dogの時も、Grunge前の若い時も、オッサンになってもセクシー。
年を追うごとにセクシーさが増して、カッコよくて、匂う様な色気を振りまいていたChrisだったが、あの色気って孤独感や、何が痛みを抱えているような空気を放っていたからだと思う。
誰しも皆、何かを背負って生きている。どんな能天気な人に見えても、ハートの奥底に、悩みや苦しみを抱えている。
その辛さや痛み、寂しさをChrisは、歌詞に投影するから、聴いているものに共感をあたえ、苦しみを抱えながらも歩んでいる姿が、危険な香りに感じて、又、愛おしく思えるから、色気を感じるのだと思う。
Lyraなんて、母性本能をくすぐられるもの。
彼の場合、父性愛も感じる歌詞があるからね。優しい人だったんだよ。この曲の歌詞もそう。
優しさと孤独って、人を切なくさせる。

【Can’t Change Me】は、Chris Cornell のソロワークで1番売れた曲だ。第一週目で75000枚セールスし、USだけでも393,000 枚以上セールスしたビックヒット曲だ。
初リリースにして、Main Stream Rock チャートでNo.7を獲得しているし、Alternative チャートでもチャートインし、Grammy Awardsグラミー賞の Best Male Rock Vocal Performance 賞を受賞した( 2000 Grammy Awards)。
Chrisの輝かしいソロ活動の始まりに相応しい幕開け。
1998年にこのアルバムは制作開始。Alain Johannes とNatasha Shneiderのバンド Elevenとコラボレーションし、ロスアンジェルスのホームスタジオで、レコーディングを始めた。因みにこのElevenには、あのJack Ironsがドラマーとしていたのよ。

まるで映画やアメコミのヒーロー物よね、Avengersとかね。

【Can’t Change Me】は、Soundgardenのヒット曲である 【Blow Up the Outside World】や、【Fell on Black Days】のに似ている。
それについては、Chrisもインタビューで認めている。
Soundgardenのバンド活動をやめて直ぐのソロだったから、まだ余韻が残っていても不思議じゃないものね。
でもLyraは、この曲のようなChrisの曲が好きだ。
優しさと悲しみを含んだロック・バラードが、彼の優しくて激しい歌声に合う。
この後にRage Against the Machineの Zac 以外のメンバーとAudio Slaveを結成して、Old Waveっぽいハードロックを作り出していく前のGrungeの残り香が、憂いを含んでいて素敵だからだ。
Audioslave後のChrisの歌声も好きだが、曲調は、迷走していてChrisの良さが半減しているソロワークだと思うからだ。
このはじめのソロのChrisの方が良い。
彼も自信作だと感じていたようで、1999年のリリース後に、数年たってから再リリースしたのだから。
そして、それ以外にもフランス語で取り直したバージョンもあるのだ。
その曲は【Euphoria Morning】のデラックス盤と、日本盤、ヨーロッパ盤にボーナストラックとして入っている (これは、1999年11月にリリースされたもの)。

そして下は、12曲で、タイトルが、Morningではなく、Mourningに変更されている。変えなきゃ良かったのに(涙)。

「Morning」は「朝」だから良いけど Mourningは、「喪中」だから考えちゃう…タイトルを、変えて、この単語を使わなかったら、演技悪くないし、死ななかったんじゃないかって。
「高揚感の朝」の方が良いじゃない？
考え過ぎなのはわかっている。でもChrisには、ずっと歌っていて欲しかったから、つい思ってしまうの。
「そのうち君は挑戦して、より良い人間になろうとするだろ、皆の幸せのために自分の生き方を変える時、それはしばらくの間は続くんだ。でもそのうち核心に辿りつくのさ、こんな風に… 『クソっ！俺は俺だ！』ってね、そして、君は曲を書く【Can’t Change Me】ってね。」
この曲の構想がアドベンチャー映画に出てくるようなヒロインと彼氏のイメージであったとしても、「俺は俺だ！」と改めて思うなんて、当時のChrisの気持ちだったんじゃないかって思う。
音楽性の違いから解散したのも、Chrisが、「俺は俺だ！」と思ったからだと思えるからだ。
ロックしたいバンドメンバーと、ロックもポップスも試してみたかったChrisの方向性の違いが、あったのは確かだからだ。
この【Can’tChange Me】には、1998年当時のChrisの気持ちが投影された歌詞だろう。
このビデオのアイデアもChrisのもので、それをJohn Renckが監督したのだから、彼の想いが詰まった曲なのだ。
まさかのヒロインは、当時の奥さんかな？Alice In Chainsのマネージャーをしていた時期だと思う。
何となく2人の関係性が見えた気がした。

Euphoria Mourning (originally titled Euphoria Morning) is the first solo studio album released by American musician Chris Cornell. It was released on September 21, 1999 through Interscope Records. Euphoria Mourning sold over 75,000 copies in its first week of release, and eventually sold 393,000 copies in the U.S. alone. While a large success critically, it did not sell nearly as well as Cornell’s albums with Soundgarden. It is Cornell’s only album between the split of Soundgarden until he formed Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine. The lead single “Can’t Change Me” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

In 1998, Cornell began working on material for a solo album on which he collaborated with Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider of the band Eleven, and the album was recorded at their Los Angeles home studio.
Cornell stated that the lead single “Can’t Change Me” is “kind of a sad discovery that this singer is involved with this person that has amazing powers to help people and change things positively, and he’s realizing that none of it is really rubbing off on him.” Cornell told MTV News that the genesis of “Can’t Change Me” can be found in some of Soundgarden’s hits, such as “Blow Up the Outside World” and “Fell on Black Days”. Cornell also recorded a version of the song in French. This version is a bonus track on the deluxe version of Euphoria Morning and on the Japanese and European editions of the album that were released in November 1999.
The album proved commercially unsuccessful although the album’s single “Can’t Change Me” was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards
When at some point you try and become a better person and change your ways to make everyone happy, and that goes on for a while and then you get to a point where it’s like: Fuck it! I’m me! And then you write a song called Can’t Change Me.” That was said by Chris Cornell in his live album Songbook
Chris Cornell told MTV News that students of Soundgarden’s music can find the genesis of “Can’t Change Me” in some of the band’s hits, such as “Blow Up the Outside World” and “Fell on Black Days”.
About the meaning of the lyrics, Cornell told MTV’s Making the Video:
It was written in the middle of a long songwriting period that I had for the record. Although it’s the first song released as a single, it was probably one of the later songs that I wrote. The idea of the song… you kinda get the idea that it’s a statement from the singer. It’s kind of more of a sad discovery that this singer is involved with this person that has amazing powers to help people and change things positively, and he’s realizing that none of it is really rubbing off on him.
According to AllMusic’s Euphoria Mourning is “a shaded, textured rock album,” lacking the “grinding sludge and furious rock” of Soundgarden. Nevertheless, the album was described to be of a piece with Soundgarden’s psychedelic-indebted 1994 album Superunknown and delves back into ’60s psychedelic melodies and acoustic ditties.”
