好きな声のお方、、、David Gahan!
色んな声がこの世には溢れかえっているけれど、この人の声は本能的に燃えてしまう声だ。
日本人で良い声だなあと思える人が１人もいないから、凄く今この国で生きているのがつまらない。
キンキン声の高い金切り声を男女問わずあげている世界じゃ、いつまでたっても日本の歌手は、世界から馬鹿にされたままよ。
今日Lyraが和訳＆解説するのは、イングランドエセックス州バジルドン出身のバンド、Depeche Mode デペッシュ・モード。
1980年からミュージックシーンのメインストリームで走り続けて来たビッグバンドである。

Lyraのこのブログでは、常連さんのバンド。
毎回、どマイナーなバンドから超メジャーなアーティストまで、色々ジャンルを決めずに自由にジャンルの壁を超えて和訳しているLyraですが、訳していてドンドン気分が乗って来て、楽しくなってくるバンドと言うと、このDepeche Modeが１位２位に上がって来るの。
飽きないのよね、この人たち。
多分、ソングライティングを担うMartin Goreの頭ん中とLyraの頭ん中が同じなのかもしれない。
この人の美意識の強さとか、世には変態集団みたいな奇異な目で見られそうな趣味趣向を、太陽の日に晒してまで曝け出してしまう表現力が、Lyraの理想とする表現方法に似ていて他人事には思えなくなってしまうの。
だからDepeche Modeの歌詞を和訳するのは楽しいし、自分のことのように手に取るように理解できてしまって恐ろしくもなる。
他人なのにわかってしまう怖さと嬉しさがごちゃ混ぜというのか、、、。
でも、和訳したのを文章にして目に焼き付けながらDavidの声を聴くと、一種のアートにもなっているから不思議。
特に、今日Lyraが和訳するのに選んだ曲が収録されているアルバムは、より彼らの人気を決定づける作品になったし、より彼らの一般大衆とは違った恋愛観や人間関係を露呈してしまったアルバムと言っていいだろう。
Lyraが和訳するのは1990年リリースの世界的に大ヒットしたアルバム『Violator』から【Halo】。
ちょっとマイナーな曲だけど、低音が気持ち良い素晴らしい曲だよ。

Though not commercially released as a single, “Halo” was pushed to radio stations in 1990 and peaked at #28 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart that summer.
“Halo” is a song of album “Violator” that’s seventh studio album.
Songwriter Martin Gore told NME “Halo” was written about giving in to immorality, yet still feeling a sense of wrongfulness about it.
Its music video features a pre-fame Jenna Elfman, as one of the dancers. She was directed to “dance badly.”
Violator is the seventh studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 19 March 1990 by Mute Records. Preceded by the singles “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence” (a top-10 entry in both the United Kingdom and the United States), Violator propelled the band into international stardom. The album yielded two further commercially successful singles, “Policy of Truth” and “World in My Eyes”.

Davidの声は妖しくてセクシー。
そして優しい。
聴いているものを宥めているかにも取れる癒しの歌を歌う。
彼も牡牛座だから根は、ど真面目だろう。
普通の星座と違って土の星座は、独特な色を持っている人が多い。
強烈な個性は尋常じゃない。
他の星座とは類を見ない濃ゆい個性。
他の星座が「変わっています」とか「個性的で」云々言われていても、比べるに値しない。
行き着くところまで行ってしまうのが、土の星座だ。
ヤバイことだろうと恐れはせずに、真面目にいけないこと、危ないことを突き詰めてしまう。
それが、牡牛座なの。
Davidは、突き詰め始めていたんだろう。
このアルバムの次(『Songrs of Faith and Devotion』)で、Davidは、完全なるトランスフォームをしてしまうが、このアルバムから兆しはあった。
この【Halo】でTatooがお目見えしたのもそうだしね。

ズブズブにハマる悪癖の沼にハマって行く彼が歌うのは、Martinが作り出した悪質性のある愛の姿か？
それを優しく歌うDavid。
もしかしたら、悪事へと誘っているのかもしれないね。

アルバム『Violator』は爆発的に大ヒットしたアルバムだ。
低音でミドルテンポのサウンドが多く、美しいメロディーで、私たちを酔わせながら不道徳な事を、まるで民衆に問うかのように歌い上げる。
いかに罪か、いかに悪か。
自分の中にある欲望にも忠実に露呈して行く。
中には目を背けるものもいるだろう。
厳格なカソリックならば、この【Halo】に描かれた世界は、罪にまみれていて恐ろしくもあるだろうし、『Violator』のアルバム全体を覆うセクシャルな世界には、頭を抱えてしまうであろう。
でも、不思議なのはどれも罪悪感に苛まれていない。
Martinはカソリック教徒の筈だが、彼の書く詩には欲望と罪の意識で悩んでいても、主人公は必ず希望へと歩みだしてしまう。
その前向きさが、重罪をも天国行きのように描いてしまうのだ。
絶望の中に見える希望の兆しを描くことで、ダーク過ぎるイメージやサウンドを救いの歌へと転換しているのは、素晴らしい。
Martinの手腕の見せ所の言葉遊びもあってLyraは、うっとりしてしまう。
どんなに『Violator』= 違反者であろうと、救いの道があると言っているようだから。
それが、どんなに暴行者であろうと夢の中までは、お咎めは喰わない。
どんなものでも救われる、、、そう、この『Violator』は、優しく私たちを慰めているのだ。

この【Halo】と言う曲は、猥褻な行為や不道徳な欲望に負けてしまった人間の歌だ。
Martinは、「それは悪質性がある感覚だと感じているにしても、不道徳な欲望に負けてしまうことについて書いた」と言う。
確かに足鎖をつけて歩いていたり、後光が逆転してる、、、と言った言葉を使っているから、この言葉通りならば、罪人だ。
どんな罪かは、大体わかるんじゃない？
不道徳な関係にある２人。
不倫や不貞行為はカソリックでは重罪だ。
それを、相手に話している主人公は愛し合っている相手に、罪の意識を植え付けようとしているかのようだ。
多分、己も罪人だから。
２人は一緒と言いたげね。
でも、猥褻な２人であったとしても、２人の愛は真実ならば、地球が壊れてしまっても、あらゆる障害が崩れ去ったら、２人は滅びても、愛は永遠に続くと言いたいのだと思う。
だから、「俺の腕の中で耽溺しろよ」と訳してみたの。
ただ抱きしめるだけなんだけど、２人にとっては安らぎと情熱両方だと思えるから。
激しい愛。
激しいだけの欲望かもしれない、もしかしたら。
けど、２人が互いに信頼しあっていたら、良いんじゃない？
有罪と言われてもおかしくない２人には、愛は贅沢品だけど、真実ならば愛に値する人間だと言っている。
それだけ愛とは崇高なもの。
そう、【Halo】は、優しくDavidが語るように、欲望と罪の歌詞を歌うことで私たちを救済するのだ。
どんな人間でも、間違いを犯したことはあるだろう。
どんな人間でも、欲望を抱いたりするものだ。
でも、その人間に嘘偽りない思いやりや、愛があれば救われるのかもしれない。
真剣だったらそれで良い。
互いに信頼しあっていて、
互いに思いやりを持って、寄り添うならば。
どんなに痛みを伴おうとも愛し合える。
あなたとならば。
Compared to previous efforts, the band decided to try a new approach to recording. Alan Wilder said, “Usually we begin the making of a record by having extensive pre-production meetings where we decide what the record will actually sound like, then go into a programming studio. This time we decided to keep all pre-production work to a minimum. We were beginning to have a problem with boredom in that we felt we’d reached a certain level of achievement in doing things a certain way.” Martin Gore elaborated, “Over the last five years I think we’d perfected a formula; my demos, a month in a programming studio, etc. etc. We decided that our first record of the ’90s ought to be different.”
With co-producer Mark “Flood” Ellis, Wilder began a complementary working relationship, with Flood able to provide the technical know-how and Wilder working on the arrangements and song textures. “That’s how we made the group work at that time”, clarified Wilder, “by accepting that we all had different roles and not actually all trying to do the same thing. So we ended up with this unwritten agreement in the band, where we’d all throw together a few ideas at the beginning of a track. Then Fletch and Mart would go away, and they’d come back after we’d worked on it for a while to give an opinion.”
There was also a notable change in Gore’s demos. After the rigid, limiting effects of almost-finished demos for Music for the Masses, Gore, agreeing to Wilder’s request, kept them less complete this time around. Several of the basic recordings consisted of vocals over a simple guitar or organ part, with the odd percussion loop, but less sequenced material. The sparse demos allowed the band to take creative liberties with the songs.
Martin called the track “World in My Eyes” a very positive song. “It’s saying that love and sex and pleasure are positive things.”
The song “Blue Dress”, which Gore called “pervy”, is simply about “watching a girl dress and realising that this is ‘what makes the world turn.'”
With “Halo”, Gore said, “I’m saying ‘let’s give in to this’ but there’s also a real feeling of wrongfulness […] I suppose my songs do seem to advocate immorality but if you listen there’s always a sense of guilt.”
Regarding the album’s title, Martin said, “We called it Violator as a joke. We wanted to come up with the most extreme, ridiculously Heavy Metal title that we could. I’ll be surprised if people will get the joke.”
