今日は。毎年恒例のKurt Cobainのバースデイをお祝いしてNirvana の曲を和訳解説します〜一緒にお祝いしてKurtを忍びましょう〜と毎年やって来ましたが、今日選んだ曲は、Nirvana ファンの間で１位、２位を争うほどの大人気曲。でもKurt自身はイマイチだったと言う…何とも言えぬ思いに駆られてしまうヒット曲です。
Kurtは商業主義を嫌っていたのに、キャッチーな曲を書けてしまう、、、それが、彼をジレンマとなって追い詰めてしまったのか？
その抵抗の手段としてインタビューで、人気なんか関係ないと言っていたりしていたのだが、今回の【In Bloom】は、変な歌詞をわざと書いて客に歌わせてやると言う皮肉をやってしまった、、、「こんなことして余計に自分を追い詰めてる」といたたまれなくなります。
何となくどこまでしたら自分を嫌いになるか？と、親を試している子供みたいだ。
それって愛が欲しいから？人を信じたいから、、、でしょう？
人を信じられなくなっていたんだろう、、、人気商売って売れると知らない親戚が異常に増えると言うし、、、Kurtの見た汚い世界はよく知ってるよ。
誰かKurtに理解者であり正常な人がいたら、考え方が変わったか？まだ生きていてくれたかな？なんて敵わぬ思いが溢れてくる。
こんな歌詞を歌わせて、誰かに叱って欲しかったのかも。ダメだよって抱きしめって欲しかったのかな？
こんな歌詞を一緒にSing alongする観客を、ぼうーっと見つめながら、音は遠のいて行く。意識も飛ぶ。

ミュージックビデオ
往年のEd Sulilivan Showぽいこのミュージックビデオにこの歌詞だと、作られた世界、作られた音楽業界の軽薄さを表して、馬鹿にしているように思えて来る。
このMVは。1993年のMTVVideo MusicAwardsでBestAlternativeVideoを受賞した、アメリカの映画製作者KevinKerslakeが監督したミュージックビデオである。
昔の音楽番組は、このように女子たちが、キャーキャー言ってるだけで、アーティストの歌なんか聴いちゃいなかった。歌詞なんてもっと聞こえていない、、。それをモチーフにしているミュージックビデオなのだ。
Kurtが嫌がっていた虚構の世界を表している。このMVを見るたび、weezerのBuddy Hollyは、このビデオのKurt 達をパロっているのかも？と毎度、毎度思う。意識していたのかな?ちょっとだけ、昔のRiversは似ていたし。

ヴァージョン違い
アルバムヴァージョンは、1991年リリースされた2つのヴァージョンの2番目にリリースされたもの。前ヴァージョンは、1990年に録音されたが、バンドはまだ元のレコードレーベルであるSub Popと契約していた。当初、Sub Pop Video Network Vol1VHSコンピレーションでミュージックビデオとしてのみリリースされた。
【InBloom】は1992年11月にアルバムの4番目のシングルであり、ラスト・シングルとしてリリースされた。アメリカでは物理的にはシングルとしてリリースされなかったにもかかわらず、メインストリームロックチャートで5位に達するという、アメリカのヘヴィーローテーションのエアプレイの凄さを生み出した。

シングルの国際リリースにより、アイルランドとポルトガルでトップ10になり、フィンランドとニュージーランドでトップ20になり、スウェーデンとイギリスでトップ30になった曲である。
シングルには、このブログで紹介した 【Sliver】(→ 解説 Sliverの魅力 Take Me Home!)のライブと、【Polly】のライブヴァージョンが入っていた。
人気曲である為カバーバージョンも多く、カントリーミュージシャンのスタージルシンプソンは、2016年のアルバム「ASailor’s Guide to Earth」でカントリーソングとして「InBloom」を取り上げている。
あと去年からNo.1ヒット出しまくっている、リルナズXは2019年の曲【Panini】(フランシスビーンコバーンによって承認された）にそれに使用している。
【In Bloom】の元
バンド初期の頃、ベーシストのKrist Novoselic によると【In Bloom】は「元々はBad Brains の歌のように聞こえた」らしい。それを自宅でKurt によってテンポをスローダウンされ、作り直されたと言う。
David Frick との2002年のRolling Stone誌のインタビューでは、Krist はKurt が「家に帰って槌で打った。彼はそれに取り組んでいた。それから彼は俺に電話して来て「この曲を聞いて」と言ったんだ。彼は電話でそれを歌い始めたんだ。ギターを聞くことができたが。それはNevermind の【In Bloom】であり、よりポップなものだったよ」と話している。
この曲が初披露されたのは、1990年4月1日にシカゴのキャバレーメトロでライブ。翌日、バンドはウィスコンシン州マディソンのスマートスタジオでプロデューサーのButch Vigと一緒に当時のレーベルのサブポップから出す新しいリリースとして、これをレコーディングし始めた。
5日間のセッションで録音された8曲の中には【InBloom】があり、元々、Vigが16トラックのマスターテープから、かみそりの刃で物理的に切り取って、ゴミ箱にいらないものを捨てるようにブリッジを取り除いたものになった。セッション中に録音された曲をシングルでリリースするという当初の計画は、ドラマーのチャドチャニングが脱退後、この年の終わりまで放置されたらしい。(ほったらかしだったと言うこと)
バンドは代わりに素材をデモテープとして使用し、音楽業界に渡したわけだが、主要なレコードレーベルの間でグループへの関心を生み出すきっかけになった。ただし、セッションのいくつかの曲は、1990年と1991年のさまざまな公式リリースに引き続き登場する「InBloom」は、1991年のSub Pop Video Network Volume 1VHSコンピレーションでアルバム出はなしに、ミュージックビデオのみリリースされた。
アルバム『Nevermind』レコーディング
この曲は、1991年5月にカリフォルニア州ヴァンナイズのサウンドシティスタジオで、バンドの2nd アルバムとメジャーレーベルのデビュー作である『Nevermind』のセッション中にVigによってレコーディングされたが、前回のバンドとのセッションでVigがよく知っていたため、セッション中に最初に作成された曲の1つだ。
Smart Studiosで録音された他の曲と同様に、「In Bloom」の編曲はほとんどされておらず、バンドの新しいドラマーであるDaveGrohlはChanningが演奏したそのままでレコーディングしている。
Butch Vigによると、複数のボーカルテイクを録音することに対するKurt の焦りは、マスターボーカルテイクを選ぶのに困難だったと言う。
2005年のドキュメンタリーClassicAlbums：Nirvana – Nevermindで、Vigは、Kurtに複数のテイクを録音させるために使用した方法を明らかにしている。
「ビートルズのジョンレノンはスタジオで彼のボーカルをダブルトラックした。あるテイクから次のテイクへ、そして詩からコーラスへとKurt のボーカルの強さが変化することも、Kurt の録音中に「オンザフライ」で入力レベルを調整しなければならなかった」とButch Vigには問題の多い作業だった。

最終的に、Vigは、Kurt Cobainのボーカルフレージングの一貫性により、複数のテイクを1つのマスターにまとめて編集する。
Vig はまた、Dave Grohl にハイハーモニーを歌わせることに決め、Kurt と同じようにそれらをダブルトラックで行い、Dave は当初、適切な音符を叩くのが困難だったらしいが、最終的にはVig が望んでいたものを歌うことが出来たらしい。だが【InBloom】のオリジナルのスタジオバージョンは、おそらく時間の制約のために、ハーモニーを特徴的にはしていない。
【In Bloom】は、1994年3月1日にドイツのミュンヘンにあるターミナル・アインツで、ニルヴァーナの最後のショーである最後のライブでも演奏されていた。お気に入りの曲？もしくは客が喜ぶNirvana定番曲のヒットソングになったのだ。
歌詞について
この歌詞は、Nirvanaが1デビューアルバム【In Bloom】を1989年にリリースした後に、ジョークと浅い認識しかないメジャーなタイプ(ミーハー)の人達が、アンダーグラウンドなミュージックシーンに現れて来たことについて書いている。
アンダーグラウンド・ミュージックシーンではない奴らを楽しませていた自分、、、それがKurtは、ミーハーで嫌だったのかもしれない。
Nirvana伝記作家Michael Azerrad は、1993年のNirvana の伝記『Come As You Are』でこの曲の歌詞は、2nd アルバムNevermind の大成功に続いて、「バンドが、大衆の人気を楽しんでいる、とよく説明されていた」と指摘している。
「素晴らしい皮肉だ」と言い「実際に、何百万人と言う人達がそれを一緒にみんなで歌っているキャッチーな曲ですからね。1990年代初頭のグランジムーブメントでは、曲は、コンサートにいるファンに向けられたものだと思いました。ライブ会場では、一方にはEven Flow [Pearl Jam の曲]、もう一方にはRape Me と書かれていたり(垂れ幕や段ボールに書いたメッセージ)、Nirvanaと他のシアトルのバンドや、グランジのメディア表現との間に違いがあることを、全く理解していなかったファンばかりなんですよ。私はいつもこの曲を[InUterosingle] Rape Me と関連付けてきましたよ。」
Kurt の伝記『Heavier Than 』を書いたCharles R. Cross は、作品中で、この曲はKurtの友人であるディラン・カールソンの「thinly disguised portrait (薄く偽装された肖像画」のことであると主張している。
解釈は色々人によって違うが、当時のKurtの気持ちからしたら、人々への不信感を描いていると思う。
Kurt 「俺は、田舎者が好きじゃないし、マッチョな男性も好きじゃない。」と、語っている。随分ときついことを言っているが、グランジ・カルチャーや自分達のことを知らない売れ線好きな人達に、チヤホヤされたくない、と言うことだろう。
それを売れ線狙いの音楽ファン達に、歌わせるのだから、なんとも拗らせた人間だ…とKurtに同情してしまう。気にしなければ良いのに、、、ひにくれてしまう理由もわからなくもないが。
歌詞の最初に出てくる、「食べる為に子供達を売る」というのは、極度の飢饉の状態が頭をよぎる。作物の出来が悪いと、冬に飢えてしまうし「天気が気分を変える」の歌詞は、飢饉の時代が終わったことを示している為、関連性があるのがわかる。春になると収穫の時期になり、それを祝う、一連の人間の営みを謳ってはいるのだ。
だがいきなり「春が再びここにある/生殖腺」は、春の最も美しい部分である花が咲くのが、実際には生殖腺を露出している植物の集まりであるということを表しているのだ。Kurtはこれを卑猥という意味で書いたのか、ただ単に恥部を曝け出していると言ってるだけなのかは、分からないが、感じ方は受け取り手に委ねましょう。
ただこういう美しさと醜悪さを対比するのは、あの作家の手法だな、とLyraは共感する。また、この節はおそらくKurt の厳しい育成(自分の成長過程)についてのコメントだろう。なぜならKurtは、両親が彼のことを気にかけていないと信じていたからだ。
さらに、カートの母親は「天気が気分を変える」ように忠誠心を変えた、、、突然、彼女は再び「若く」なり、カートは皮肉な「果物の青春」、「開花の優しい年齢」でこれの虚偽を明らかにして行く。
彼の愛する親としての母親と性的存在としての彼女の隠されたアイデンティティとの間の対立は、叙情的な「生殖腺」で具体化される。Kurt はまた、『Lunch」の作者であるWikliam BurroughsのCUT-UP手法を使用しているのもわかるからだ。母が女として目覚めた時を、Kurtは思い出して嫌な気分、悲しい気分になった、、、それだけならば分からなくもないが、度々思い出していたのだろうか？
メインの内容では、Kurtはこの【In Bloom】で「晴天のファン」なるミーハー族な大衆を批判している。確かに彼らは時流に乗ったが、それが何であるかを本当に知らないからだ。 Kurt は、多くの人が彼の歌の要点を理解せず、単に盲目的に一緒に歌うことを非常によく知っていたから、この曲で、彼は非常に長い合唱をわざと書いた。
人々は自分たちが歌っているのに曲を理解していないことに気付くだろう、、、いやそれすらも気づかずに歌い続けるのかも。
「彼の銃を撃つことが好き」の歌詞は、おそらくKurtが最も嫌っていたタイプの人々への言及だ。音楽より深い芸術的関心を欠いている銃を持った思慮のないマッチョな男。それが嫌いだとKurtは、インタビューで言っていた。

ロックは非常にマッチョなもの、結局は男社会の世界であるが、Kurt がRockに夢中になった理由ではない。彼は反権威的な反乱と嘆きが好きだったが、胸がドキドキするマッチョな男性らのワイルドさは無関係なのである。だから、歌詞で批判した、インタビューでマッチョな奴は嫌いと言っていたようにだ。私達からしたらわざわざ言うことなかろうに、と感じるが、Kurtには嫌で嫌でたまらなかったから書いてしまったのだろう。
次第に歌詞は、数の異なるものを参照して行く。「優しい世代(年齢)」は、人の実際の年齢である可能性はある。人が20代前半に経験する感情的なジェットコースターをKurtは、表したいらしい。
「優しい世代」は、Kurtが後に「フロントマン」として誤って置かれたと感じた世代全体だ。
団塊の世代の子供たちの世代全体が、前の世代とは根本的に異なる視点と理想を持って「開花」（成長）していたのだから。
私達が開花した(成長した)時には、その前の世代とは根本的に異なる視点や理想を持っているのは仕方がないことだ。
ただ分かり合えないとはLyraは思わない。そこに理解しあう気持ちや、相手を受けいれたり、考えたりする心の余裕があれば乗り越えられる壁だと思う。愛と柔軟性があれば。
その壁は世代だけでなく男女の性差やジェンダレスの曖昧さや自由、国差や言葉の壁もあるが、この理解する心=愛と柔軟性があれば乗り越えられる。
勿論、カテゴライズされた音楽や業界も、親子関係も、恋愛関係も、人間関係も、国際関係も、敷いては世界情勢もだ。
ただそれを持ち合わせてない人間たちが多すぎる。ただ単に何も考えずBloom 成長しただけの輩が多いから、理解もえられず、信頼も与えず、相手を攻撃、銃をぶっ放すように搾取するだけなのだ。
愛と受け入れたり理解する柔軟性。それが、あれば愛を理解し与えることができる気がする、どんな人であろうとも。
Kurtにも愛と柔軟性を持ち合わせた理解者が1人でもいたら、こんな観客に歌わせるような歌詞は書かなかっただろう。
それを「Kurt幸せになってよかったね」という暖かい人と「つまらなくなったな、お前」という冷酷な人が、またもや表れるのだろうけど。堂々巡りか？人間は何も変わらんのか?
私ならば好きな人達がつまらなくなろうが、何だろうが、生きていてくれさえすれば良い。好きな人達が、自分のままを出せて笑い、嫋やかに生きてくれたら、それで良い。そして一緒に共有できたら尚楽し…。

According to Nirvana’s bassist Krist Novoselic, “In Bloom” “originally sounded like a Bad Brains song,” before being slowed down and reworked by Cobain at home. In a 2002 Rolling Stone interview with David Fricke, Novoselic recalled that Cobain “went home and [he] hammered it. He kept working on it. Then he called me on the phone and said, ‘Listen to this song.’ He started singing it on the phone. You could hear the guitar. It was the ‘In Bloom’ of Nevermind, more of a pop thing.”
The song was first performed live on April 1, 1990 at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. The following day, the band began work on recording a new release for their then-label Sub Pop, at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin with producer Butch Vig. Among the eight songs recorded during the five-day session was “In Bloom,” which originally featured a bridge that Vig removed by physically cutting it out of the 16-track master tape with a razor blade, and throwing in the garbage. The original plan of releasing the songs recorded during this session on a single release were abandoned later in the year, after the exit of drummer Chad Channing. The band instead used the material as a demo tape, which circulated amongst the music industry and generated interest in the group among major record labels. However, a few songs from the session still appeared on various official releases in 1990 and 1991. “In Bloom” was released as a music video only, on the Sub Pop Video Network Volume 1 VHS compilation in 1991.
Nevermind
The song was re-recorded by Vig at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California in May 1991, during the sessions for the band’s second album and major label debut, Nevermind. It was one of the first songs worked on during the sessions, due to Vig’s familiarity with it from his previous session with the band. Like the other songs recorded at Smart Studios, the arrangement for “In Bloom” was left mostly unchanged, with the band’s new drummer Dave Grohl staying close to what Channing had played.

According to Vig, Cobain’s impatience with recording multiple vocal takes made it difficult to acquire a master vocal take. In the 2005 documentary Classic Albums: Nirvana nevermind. Vig revealed the methods he used to get Cobain to record multiple takes, which included tricking him into believing that certain parts were not properly recorded and needed to be done again, and reminding him that the Beatles’ John Lennon double-tracked his vocals in the studio. The varying intensity of Cobain’s vocals from one take to the next, and from the verses to the choruses, also presented a problem for Vig, who had to adjust the input levels “on the fly” while recording Cobain. Ultimately, Vig was able to edit several takes together into a single master, due to the consistency of Cobain’s vocal phrasing.
Vig also decided to have Grohl sing high harmonies, double-tracking them as he did with Cobain’s. Grohl initially had difficulty hitting the proper notes, but ultimately was able to sing what Vig wanted. The original studio version of “In Bloom” featured no harmonies, possibly due to time constraints.
Post-Nevermind
“In Bloom” was performed for the final time live on March 1, 1994 at Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany, Nirvana’s last show.
Lyrics
According to the 1993 Nirvana biography Come As You Are by Michael Azerrad, “In Bloom” was originally written about “the jocks and shallow mainstream types” of the underground music scene the band began to find in their audience after the release of their 1989 debut album, Bleach. As Azerrad points out, the song’s lyrics “translated even better to the mass popularity the band enjoyed” following the breakthrough success of their second album, Nevermind. “The brilliant irony,” Azerrad wrote, “is that the tune is so catchy that millions of people actually do sing along to it.” English journalist Everett True suggested the song may also have addressed the band’s discomfort with being part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, saying that “I assumed it was directed towards the fans who would show up at concerts with signs saying Even Flow [a Pearl Jam song] on one side and Rape Me – I think – on the other: the fans who did not understand there was a point of difference between Nirvana and other Seattle bands or media representations of grunge. I’ve always associated the song with [In Utero single] Rape Me. Like they’re a pair.”
In his biography of Cobain, Heavier Than Heaven, Charles R. Cross asserted that the song was a “thinly disguised portrait” of Cobain’s friend Dylan Carlson.

It sounded like a Bad Brains song. One day Kurt called me and started singing. It was the ‘In Bloom’ of Nevermind, more of a pop thing.
Sell the kids for food” brings to mind a state of extreme famine. If the crop was bad in summer you might starve in winter. “Weather changes moods”, shows that the time of famine is over. When spring comes, it’s time for harvest and there’s usually celebration.
“Spring is here again / reproductive glands” is a straightforward reference to how the prettiest part of springtime – blooming flowers – is really just a bunch of plants exposing their reproductive glands.
Alternately, This verse is possibly a comment on Cobain’s tough upbringing. He believed his parents didn’t care about him (“sell the kids for food”).
Additionally, Kurt’s mother has changed her loyalties as in ‘weather changes moods’. Suddenly she’s ‘young’ again, and Kurt exposes the falseness of this with the ironic lines ‘bruises on the fruit’, ‘tender age in bloom’. Finally, the conflict between his mother as his loving parent and her concealed identity as a sexual being is crystallized in the lyric ‘reproductive glands’.
Kurt also uses a technique called CUT-UP… copied from the author of the lunch naked William Burroughs.

Kurt Cobain is criticizing the “fair-weather fans.” Sure they jumped on the bandwagon but they don’t really know what it’s about.
Cobain was very much aware that many people would not get the point of his songs and simply sang along with them blindly. On this song, he wrote a very sing-a-long chorus so that people would find themselves singing but not understanding the song: “He’s the one who likes all the pretty songs, and he likes to sing along, but he knows not what it means.”
“Likes to shoot his gun” is probably a reference to the type of people that Cobain hated the most: thoughtless macho guys with guns who lack a deeper artistic interest in the music. As the band grew more popular, these facetious people like started to come to their shows and he hated it. Cobain doesn’t mean that they’re about to shoot at him or anything, just that recklessly shooting guns is the type of thoughtless, testosterone-driven activity that these men do for enjoyment. They’re into the grunge scene just for the thrill of it, and as an excuse to go crazy and raise hell. Rock is very macho, but that’s not why Kurt was into it. He liked anti-authoritarian rebellion and wailing but not the chest-pounding male bravado aspect of it.
This line could be referring to quite a few different things. The “tender age” in question could be a person’s actual age, expressing the emotional roller coaster a person (or specifically Cobain) would go through in their early twenties (not so different from Neil Young’s “Old Man”).
The “tender age” could also be the entire generation that Kurt Cobain later felt he was wrongly put as the “front-man” for. A whole generation of the children of Baby-Boomers was “blooming” (growing up) with radically different viewpoints and ideals than the generation before them.
